Job Description - Maintenance Supervisor

Position Summary The Maintenance Department provides mechanical and electrical services to the entire Kelowna facility (Calona Wines/Sandhill Winery/Canrim Packaging). The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the maintenance of the Kelowna production facility (inclusive of but not limited to the winery, packaging, warehouse, general facilities, and the onsite visitation centre) ensuring all equipment is maintained in an efficient, cost effective, safe manner adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), HACPP and Health & Safety Standards. In addition, this role is responsible for continuous improvement processes that will drive efficiencies, improve quality, minimize waste, variation, and defects. This position is based out of the Calona Wines/Sandhill Winery building in downtown Kelowna, BC. Responsibilities
  • Working with the Maintenance Manager to create a continuous improvement business strategy to increase efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness of the business operations.
  • Identifying, analyzing and making improvements to systems, processes and services.
  • Managing and leading a unionized trades workforce.
  • Collaborating with key operational stakeholders to plan, schedule and assign work to unionized staff.
  • Allocating resources as required to offsite facilities supporting operational objectives.
  • Initiating, scheduling, and monitoring planned and unplanned repairs of facility and packaging equipment adhering to GMP including Quality, HACPP and Health & Safety standards.
  • Managing work orders, preventative maintenance, and sanitary maintenance of all equipment, including spare parts inventory, complete purchase orders and manage receivables.
  • Managing and following standard operating procedures (SOP) and guidelines, as well as maintaining facility records ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Initiating and implementing improvements and repairs meeting and/or exceeding departmental objectives/targets.
  • Maintaining safety, quality and food safety compliance promoting a proactive culture with respect to the company objectives.
  • Coordinating with other departments regarding equipment downtime and repairs.
  • Alignment with external contractors to facilitate repair/project work across the facility as necessary.
  • Facilitating regularly scheduled departmental meetings; communicate priorities and relevant daily information.
  • Promoting a culture of engagement where self-initiated continuous improvement is achieved.
  • Recruitment of new employees; provide onboarding and proper training including health & safety, Company Mission, Vision and Values as well the Company and facility strategic plans.
  • Managing performance through coaching and mentoring of direct reports.
  • Ensuring a safe and healthy work environment through effective operation of the Health and Safety program and joint H&S committee.
  • Promoting the safety of employees through compliance with EH&S regulations and maintaining an attitude that all incidents are preventable.
  • Consistently strives for excellent internal and external customer service.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Electrician, Boiler Operator, and/or Millwright Certificates. Journeyman (Interprovincial Red Seal) Electrical certification or BC Certified strongly preferred.
  • College Diploma or Post-Secondary Vocational / Technical School Diploma or Applied Science Technologist Certificate
  • Labour Relations experience (i.e., interpretation of collective agreements, response to grievances, negotiations with union representatives, discipline, etc.)
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience supervising and leading a high-paced maintenance department including scheduling, completing payroll input, and day to day supervision of teammates.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Positive interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Supervisory or management courses combined with an understanding of and experience in best-in-class GMP.
  • Experience working in a Unionized liquid manufacturing facility.
  • Experience leading projects and managing teams.
  • Understanding of continuous improvement philosophy and continuously strive to improve how work is performed.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada without restriction.
Working Conditions
  • Manages own workload and prioritizes relative to the corporate agenda as well as daily demands.
  • Complex working environment; fast paced with multiple priorities.
  • Requires daily trouble shooting and problem solving in a calm and communicative manner.
  • Extensive communication with the other operations and corporate staff
  • Ability to work Monday to Friday day-shifts, with occasional weekend and/or shift work as required. Shift start and end times may vary to support the needs of the business.
  • Season weather conditions: heat, cold, wet
  • Flexible and sometimes long hours during harvest (Fall) are required.
