Job Description - Senior Construction Accountant

Senior Construction Accountant Location Toronto : Come work with an industry leading, innovative organization with a unique approach to sustainable housing! —- Compensation: $70,000-90,000 base annual salary Working Hours: 40 hours / week Position Type: Full-time, Permanent —- Mission:: Join our team as a Senior Construction Accountant and be at the forefront of financial leadership within the construction industry. Utilize your expertise to provide meticulous financial analysis and strategic guidance, optimizing project performance, ensuring fiscal integrity, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations, and fostering sustainable growth for our organization and stakeholders. Expected Outcomes (includes but not limited to):: Financial Reporting• Prepare and analyze financial statements and reports including those specific to construction projects or the construction industry.
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards and regulations.
  • Lead & manage month-end and year-end close processes ensuring accuracy and timely completion, and generate and review various financial statements and reports for management and stakeholders.
  • Responsible for all General Ledger entries.
Banking & Cash Management• Review & reconcile bank accounts/activity daily, and manage online banking platforms, templates and other related items.
  • Prepare payment runs/account transfers for manager review and arrange bank transactions for approval.
  • Prepare & update quarterly cash flow forecasts weekly with a high degree of accuracy and insight.
  • Manage payroll processing and compliance, including management of payroll-related vendors and confirming accurate source deductions and remittances.
  • Ensure compliance with all tax regulations and prepare all government remittances on a timely basis.
Cost Control and Analysis• Monitor project costs and budgets throughout the construction lifecycle.
  • Analyze cost variances and provide explanations for discrepancies.
  • Implement cost control measures to optimize project profitability.
  • Review contracts with subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers to understand cost implications and financial risks.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to explain financial performance and highlighting key cost drivers.
  • Prepare Profit and Loss (P&L) statements for each project and analyze project profitability.
Project Accounting• Maintain project accounting records, including project forecasting, work-in-progress schedules, and revenue recognition.
  • Allocate costs to specific projects accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate closely with the Project Management team and the Director of Design & Construction to estimate and track project expenses and revenue.
  • Monitor project expenses throughout the construction lifecycle and ensure adherence to approved budgets.
  • Oversee tasks of holdback management, Lien Act, and client contribution milestones.
Billing and Accounts Receivable• Prepare and review client invoices for accuracy and completeness.
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging and follow up on outstanding invoices.
  • Coordinate with project teams, and customers to ensure timely billing and payment collection.
Vendor Management and Accounts Payable• Review and process vendor invoices and payments related to construction projects, and general accounts payable.
  • Verify subcontractor invoices and ensure compliance with contract terms.
  • Maintain relationships with vendors and negotiate favourable payment terms when possible.
Compliance and Audit Support• Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, tax regulations, and industry-specific requirements.
  • Assist with the management of internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Implement internal controls to safeguard company assets and prevent fraud.
  • Facilitate internal and external audits related to project finances as the primary point of contact.
  • Prepare financial statements per Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Software and Systems Management • Utilize construction accounting software (eg. Sage, QBO, Autodesk) to manage financial data efficiency.
  • Provide training and support to team members on the use of accounting systems and tools.
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to existing systems and processes.
The Candidate: Must haves:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction accounting, with a proven track record of success in a senior accounting role.
  • Thorough understanding of construction accounting principles, including project accounting (percent completion), job costing, and progress billing.
  • Proficiency in Sage (or other construction accounting software) and Excel.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide actionable insights.
  • High degree of accountability, with a desire to “own” the general ledger, the integrity of financial reporting, and all accounting-related processes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
  • Strong individual performer with the ability to work independently and as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Positive attitude with the willingness to complete both large and small tasks.
Nice to haves:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • CPA certification
  • Proficiency in Autodesk
  • Experience working at a startup
