We are looking for a Data Engineer to join our Americas Exploration Data Science team for a full-time, two-year position based in Vancouver, BC.

This role is a great opportunity for a detail-oriented and analytical individual to collaborate with the Exploration Technical Knowledge group to leverage advanced analytics and geodata science, enhancing our mineral exploration strategies across the Americas.

Reporting to the Data Science Manager and working a desirable Monday to Friday schedule, you will be:

  • Promote Rio Tinto’s Health, Safety, and Environmental standards, fostering a culture of care, courage, and curiosity.
  • Implementing and maintaining ETL/ELT processes using Python, with a working knowledge of R and Spark/PySpark.
  • Developing and managing AWS cloud environments, focusing on services like Sagemaker, Lambda, ECS, ECR, S3, and Athena/Glue.
  • Utilizing Azure cloud services including Azure ML Studio, Functions, ADLS, and Synapse for data processing and storage.
  • Applying Python programming for data engineering tasks, utilizing libraries such as Numpy, Pandas, and boto3, along with geospatial libraries like geopandas, gdal, xarray.
  • Managing containerization and orchestration tools, specifically Docker and ECS.
  • Overseeing code versioning using GitHub, GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps.
  • Integrating machine learning concepts and MLOps standards/frameworks into exploration workflows.

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, with at least six years of experience in data engineering.
  • Proficient in Python, with experience in Jupyter notebooks, notebook-orchestration and geospatial data manipulation.
  • Expertise in AWS and Azure cloud platforms, including data services and CLI tools.
  • Familiarity with ETL/ELT processes, and experience with Spark/PySpark is an asset.
  • Knowledge of containerization with Docker and version control systems (GitHub, Azure DevOps).
  • Understanding of machine learning and MLOps principles.
  • Distributed Computing leveraging AWS Batch, AWS Parallel Cluster and Dask.

The base salary range for this role is $111,200 – $166,800 CAD in addition to allowances, bonus, equity, health or retirement benefits, and any other discretionary benefits offered at Rio Tinto. Our base salary ranges are based on role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by the skills, experience, and impact you bring to the role.
