Laboratory Technician I

Element has an opportunity for a Lab Technician I to join our rapidly expanding team in Edmonton. As a member of the operations team, the Lab Technician will be responsible for analysis and maintaining records of client samples, recording all observations and data in LIMS, ensuring appropriate quality control and maintenance is performed and requirements are met; while following documented procedures. The Lab Technician will prioritize and organize samples and workflow, to ensure efficient processing of samples and reporting of data to the client; as well as provide regular communication between different testing and processing groups.

The successful candidate will become proficient in a number of core business skills including but not limited to compliance to established safety rules, code of conduct, and company policies and procedures.

• Prioritize samples and workflow to ensure timely progression within the lab to meet client demands
• Enter sample data and observations into LIMS
• Follow documented SOPs including quality and maintenance requirements
• Identify data discrepancies
• General duties as directed by the team leader or operations manager
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment and notify coworkers of potential sample hazards; comply with all rules and responsibilities as outlined under the corporate Health and Safety Policy

• Post-secondary education in chemistry or other science related field, or high school diploma with related experience preferred
• Minimum 1 year experience in a laboratory setting
• Previous experience working with GC
• Working knowledge of laboratory safety preferred
• Data entry and computer skills,
• Troubleshooting skills
• Flexible Schedule which will include weekend and evening shifts
• Possess the ability to work alone periodically throughout the work day
• Understand what must be completed each work day and take the initiative to complete those tasks properly and in a timely manner - does not need Senior/Principal Technician or management to explain what the task is.
• Ability to re-direct original plan in order to prioritize client samples as required
• Able to work well with others and collaborate with co-workers
• Will be working with gas and oil samples, cylinders, chemicals, and solvents
• Ability to identify potential issues with information provided, and data discrepancies
• Ability to troubleshoot and perform required maintenance on instruments
• Strong ability to prioritize and organize work flow
• Flexible Schedule which will include weekend and evening shifts

Physical Demands:

• Frequency of required physical force: Minimum (moderate)
• Lifting requirements: lifting <50 lbs. often and > 50 lbs. on occasion
• Ability to perform computer based tasks for long periods of time
• Ability to lift 50+lbs periodically using safe lifting techniques
