Job Description - Legal Counsel - Infrastructure

Role description:

Arcadis seeks to add an experienced legal counsel to its growing in-house legal team to support the Infrastructure division. Our ideal candidate has legal experience in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, including areas of architecture, engineering, consulting, program and construction management. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills, superior oral and written communication skills, an ability to anticipate and deliver legal support to satisfy the needs of a dynamic, diverse, and global business team, and the flexibility to manage an evolving variety of assignments. This role can be located in any Canadian Arcadis office.

Reporting Lines: ANA General Counsel

Role accountabilities:

  • Provide comprehensive legal services during pursuit, negotiation, and delivery stages for complex, higher risk projects using various delivery models across public and private markets.
  • Collaborate with disputes counsel and risk management team to provide legal support for potential claims and disputes.
  • Provide legal advice as a trusted legal advisor to the Infrastructure Legal Director, their management team, and senior leaders worldwide.
  • Serve as a key contact to facilitate legal guidance on compliance with Arcadis policies, governance, entity management, labor & employment, intellectual property and procurement laws.
  • Monitor legal and contracting trends in the AEC industry and in architecture markets.
  • Develop proactive protocols to identify and manage routine project risks within the Infrastructure Division and advise management of the same.
  • Coordinate the efforts of outside counsel on a case-by-case basis as required.
  • Support the development and implementation of policies and processes to improve efficiency and risk management.
  • Collaborate across the Legal, Compliance and Privacy department for the professional growth and development of the legal team through formal and informal mentoring.
  • Develop and implement role-related training programs for Infrastructure division and operational staff.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities requiring general legal advice as required from time to time by the business.

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks, consistently meet deadlines, and manage high-volume of work while exercising sound judgment and commercial acumen.
  • Ability to support collaboration and operate effectively in a team environment.
  • Client-focused, entrepreneurial, proactive, pragmatic, and highly adept at problem-solving.
  • Motivated to learn things they are not familiar with, and adaptable to take that learning experience into good use.
  • Has global and international mindset (experience under different jurisdictions an advantage).

Qualifications & Experience:

  • J.D. or LL.B., with a minimum of four years’ post-qualification experience as either in-house counsel or with a well-recognized law firm.
  • A member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario (or provincial equivalent).
  • Experience negotiating and drafting complex agreements in the AEC industry preferred.
  • Aptitude to identify and manage risk, particularly related to projects in the AEC industry.
  • Collaborative, pragmatic, and effective communication skills to interact across organization, with clients, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Knowledge of Canadian federal, provincial, and local public contracting laws preferred, but not required (where no knowledge is present, ability to perform targeted legal research).

The salary range for this position is $134,190-$201,286. The base salary represents Arcadis’ hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
