The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Districts 5 and 6. The Faculty of Nursing is currently seeking a Full-time Sr. Digital & Communication Specialist . UCalgary Nursing is looking for an enthusiastic, energetic and motivated team player to fill the position of Senior Digital and Communications Specialist on our small, but mighty advancement team. This full-time, regular position reports to the UCalgary Nursing Senior Manager, Communications and, in conjunction with the manager, will strategically maintain the online platforms of the Faculty of Nursing, its academic departments and units. The position is integral to the Nursing Advancement Team [NAT] and oversees all matters pertaining to social media, website design and content, digital newsletters, event marketing, metrics/analytics and brand guidelines. The specialist provides technical development, maintenance, administration and technology applications for digital content relevant to faculty programs and initiatives in the area of communications/ marketing. You must be a communications and marketing professional and a strong writer with a passion for, and expertise in digital content development including written articles, video and social strategies. The successful applicant will provide advice and expertise [strategic, creative and technical] to ensure digital communications and marketing are optimized and meet the needs/strategic direction of the faculty while aligning with the university’s digital strategy, maintaining brand identity and digital marketing standards. As part of NAT, the specialist contributes to all strategic and practical, hands-on activities the team works on and in turn, is valued for contributions to the role, but also in assisting others to do theirs. The nature of the work is independent and largely self-directed and will require a high degree of creativity. The incumbent is expected to continually develop their position so that UCalgary Nursing is optimizing the communication potential of the website, social media and other digital platform technologies. The position involves a variety of work demands, potentially driven by internally and externally imposed deadlines and requirements. The work includes frequent interruptions and multiple simultaneous deadlines as well as occasional participation in events and activities outside normal working hours in the evenings and weekends. Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Oversee creative and technical direction for a dynamic, engaging and appealing web presence for UCalgary Nursing (including graphics, updates and navigation), effectively communicating the faculty image, mission and strategic priorities
  • Oversee content management for nursing.ucalgary.ca and Nursing Sharepoint; create content and train/advise staff on unit webpages (undergraduate, graduate, alumni, research, mental health and wellness, Indigenous and EDIA as well as student sites, etc) that adds exceptional user experience for Faculty of Nursing stakeholders and audiences
  • Ensure timely and accurate updates to information about faculty programs, projects, events, faculty news, conferences, links and announcements on the faculty website and campus news channels
  • Maintain updates to the faculty electronic bulletin boards (EBB) and YouRhere touchscreen directory
  • Maintain web profiles and blocks in profiles.ucalgary.ca, supporting and troubleshooting with Faculty Administrator
  • Working with and train users in Marketo platform for digital email distribution and event invites
  • Plan and write monthly faculty e-newsletter, The Pulse, annual Report to Community and other publications identified by Senior Manager, Communications
  • Write/edit/re- write text content for stories, webpages, communication plans, creative briefs and other documents required by Senior Manager, Communciations
  • Work closely with Specialist, NAT and Senior Manager, Communications to coordinate, recruit and promote faculty mentorship program NurseMentor (may include administration related to Mentorlink platform, social media and editorial around recruitment and event support for in-person or online mingles)
  • Provide and apply expertise in the area of graphics/web design, and the management and maintenance of websites and other web-based applications with colleagues
  • Collect and analyze website and social metrics in a timely manner and provide regular reports to relevant stakeholders
  • Continually develop knowledge and remain on top of latest trends in digital media, utilizing leading-edge technology and online communication to ensure smooth operation of key web-based products and services offered by the faculty and to make recommendations
  • Strategically manage the faculty’s social media activities on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube; assess opportunities to engage on additional platforms
  • With Senior Manager, Communications, plan, create and execute content calendar as well as handle organic and paid social media campaigns; manage the Faculty of Nursing participation in institutional social media campaigns; manage customized Sprout Social for the faculty
  • Respond and engage with social media followers and triage comments and inquiries on platforms to appropriate staff, replying in a timely fashion
  • Design web-optimized graphics on CANVA as needed
  • Work closely with all web stakeholders (undergraduate/ graduate program, alumni, research, teaching and learning, Indigenous, mental health wellness student clubs etc) to ensure a dynamic and current approach for social media support of their portfolios
  • Collaborate with Undergraduate Nursing Society (UNS) and Nursing Graduate Student Association (NGSA) coms and social media reps on social media content
  • Offer coaching and training for support staff and faculty members
  • Build and produce stories in news.ucalgary.ca for UCalgary Nursing site as well as UToday or other cross-campus content
  • Support NAT with event marketing, photography, web presence, Marketo emarketing, liaising with partners and print/digital publications Provide social media, photography and logistic support for faculty events and communications projects
  • Ensure project success is achieved by using the most effective design and content concepts and techniques throughout the project considering resources, UCalgary branding, budgets and deadlines
  • Help ensure coordination of all communication and marketing materials so they align with University of Calgary’s strategic plans as well as UCalgary Nursing strategic plan
  • Assist manager when necessary on media activities, including media tracking in Broadsight
  • Maintain NAT photo library
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in a related field of study such as visual communications, marketing, graphic design, web design or related experience in the field is required; minimum of five years experience with web-based design and social media is required
  • Experience working in an academic environment preferred
  • Understanding of current web, digital publishing technologies, SEO, social media and online trends is essential; knowledge of Sprout Social or other CMS platforms is preferred
  • Excellent writing and editing skills required
  • Excellent working knowledge of Adobe Creative Studio including InDesign and Photoshop and strong knowledge of layout and design skills, for print and web
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Teams and willingness to learn other Microsoft products as needed
  • Knowledge of Drupal, the web content management system used at UCalgary, Marketo, LiveWhale, SharePoint, etc
  • Strong background in graphics software like Canva is required
  • Strong photography skills an asset
  • Service-oriented approach to web support and social media is required
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Positive attitude and demonstrated ability to be a collaborative team member
  • Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment and prioritize conflicting demands to meet timelines is required
