ROLE


Psychiatric/Mental Health is a specialized area of nursing practice, education and research. The nurse will provide assessment, counselling and consultation to clients in the North Perth and surrounding areas to individuals who have mental health needs. The nurse will also support in the monitoring of clozapine medication for patients of the OPMH program. This includes blood draws.  The nurse will use evidenced-based and experiential knowledge from nursing and related health sciences. This practice is grounded in the values as stated in the Canadian Nursing Association Code of Ethics (CNA, 2002). Practice involves the promotion of mental health and the prevention, treatment and management of mental illness. Staff will provide care in the community, in patients homes as well as in an office-based setting. Travel within Huron and Perth counties can be expected.


REQUIRED EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION(S)



  • Current registered member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario

  • Professional designation as a Registered Nurse

  • Certification in Mental Health Nursing


REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE(S)



  • A minimum of five years progressive clinical experience with individuals with serious mental illness and/or addictions in a health care setting and/or community-based setting

  • Well-developed skills in assessment, case management, crisis intervention, medication administration, group counselling, therapy, treatment planning, and service coordination for individuals who are experiencing mental health concerns.

  • Current knowledge of psychotropic medication. An awareness of medication side effects and appropriate nursing intervention. Knowledge of rapid tranquilization techniques for all age groups. Willingness to administer medications as required in both office based and community based settings

  • Completion of mental health rating scales including, but not limited to PANSS, Edinburg, Simpson Angus, AIMS, Basis 32, BDI, Beck and Hamilton rating scales for depression and anxiety

  • Able to lead in the development and facilitation of group therapy programming specific to mental health clients

  • Demonstrated skill and ability in specific treatment modalities such as Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Therapy, Crisis Intervention Strategies.

  • Completion of Mental Health Assessment tools and the ability to interpret results

  • Demonstrated ability to complete crisis care plans with patients.

  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally with physicians and psychiatrists, community agencies and interhospital departments.

  • Ability to identify and mobilize resources in crisis situations. To act confidently and independently in the formulation of future interventions and to appreciate the client’s role in decision making, where appropriate.

  • Personal transportation and hold a valid Ontario driver’s license.

  • Auto endorsement insurance for the purposes of patient transportation

  • Demonstrated ability to complete treatment plans and crisis plans with the client, community partners and colleagues.

  • Ability and willingness to travel to clients’ homes, independently or in the company of local police services to complete assessments and to independently provide assessment to local ER physicians and physicians in offices when required.

  • Self-directed, motivated team player with a commitment to ongoing professional development and client and family centred care

  • Certification in Brief Solutions Focused Therapy

  • Completion of Suicide Training Program

  • Completion of a Crisis Intervention Certificate Program

  • Completion of Non Violent Crisis Intervention Training

  • Current CPR certification
