Academic Teaching Staff Contract Lecturer

This is a part-time position with a term length of 4 months.

Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

Media and Technology Studies invites applications for a term Lecturer to teach one section of MST 100: Introduction to Media Studies in the Fall 2026 term.

This section is offered as part of the University of Alberta’s Foundations Program and primarily serves international students transitioning into university study in Canada. The successful applicant will be expected to introduce students to the field of Media Studies while creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students from varied cultural, educational, and linguistic backgrounds.

The course introduces students to the historical development of Media Studies, its principal objects of study, and its contributions to understanding culture. It examines historical and contemporary media forms and introduces foundational approaches to analyzing media technologies, institutions, texts, and practices.

Because the course is part of the Foundations Program, the instructor will also provide clear guidance and structured support as students develop foundational skills in critical reading, academic writing, classroom discussion, and media analysis.

The term Lecturer will be teaching MST 100: Introduction to Media Studies, Fall 2026 Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00–11:00 a.m.

Responsibilities include:

• Preparing and delivering course instruction
• Developing or adapting the syllabus, readings, assignments, and assessments
• Providing timely feedback to students
• Holding appropriate office hours
• Completing grading and other course-related administrative duties
• Supporting students as they transition to the expectations of Canadian university study.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree or PhD, completed or in progress, in Media Studies, Communication, Cultural Studies, or a closely related field.

Applicants should also demonstrate:

• Appropriate knowledge of media history, theory, and analysis;
• University-level teaching experience or other relevant instructional experience;
• The ability to explain complex concepts clearly and communicate course expectations effectively; and
• A commitment to inclusive, supportive, and culturally responsive teaching.

Experience teaching international students, multilingual learners, or students transitioning into university study is strongly preferred. Experience incorporating discussion, audiovisual materials, and applied or creative activities into undergraduate teaching would be an asset.

Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with Schedule D of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
