PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Commodity Tax Advisor is responsible for supporting, managing, and continuously enhancing the organization's Canadian commodity tax compliance, recovery, advisory, audit, and tax governance functions. This role provides technical commodity tax expertise to internal stakeholders, ensures compliance with federal and provincial tax legislation, supports effective tax controls including SOX requirements, and identifies opportunities to mitigate tax risk and maximize eligible recoveries.

Acting as a trusted business partner, the Commodity Tax Advisor collaborates with client groups across the organization to interpret tax legislation, provide guidance on the tax implications of business transactions, support tax determination and system logic, and assist with audits, assessments, and dispute resolution activities.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Lead and continuously improve Canadian commodity tax compliance, recovery programs, and related controls to ensure compliance with regulatory and SOX requirements


• Provide technical commodity tax expertise, guidance, and coaching to team members and internal stakeholders


• Interpret federal and provincial commodity tax legislation and advise business partners on tax implications of operational and strategic activities


• Evaluate business transactions and recommend tax-efficient solutions that maximize recoveries and minimize tax risk within legislative requirements


• Support the design, implementation, and validation of system tax logic to ensure accurate tax treatment across business processes


• Coordinate and manage commodity tax audits, assessments, objections, and appeals with federal, provincial, and other tax authorities


• Prepare and review tax memos, audit responses, technical documentation, procedures, and correspondence with tax authorities


• Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to resolve tax issues, strengthen controls, and implement process improvements


• Identify tax risks, control gaps, and compliance issues, recommending and implementing corrective actions to enhance governance and reduce exposure


• Monitor legislative and regulatory changes, assess potential impacts to the organization, and support the development and maintenance of tax policies, procedures, training, and continuous improvement initiatives

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience


• Professional Accounting Designation (CPA or equivalent) required or in progress


• In-depth knowledge of Canadian commodity taxes, with a minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in tax compliance, advisory services, rulings, refunds, audits, appeals, and statutory interpretation. Candidates with exceptional tax research capabilities or strong expertise in tax system logic may also be considered, even if they have less direct experience.


• Strong knowledge of SAP and basic understanding of tax logic would be an added advantage


• Strong tax research skills and experience in using tax research tools


• Strong technical commodity tax knowledge


• Broad knowledge of railway or transportation business would be an asset

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
