Job Title: Advocacy & Education Officer - SEA Project
Location: St. John’s, NL
Position Type: 1 full-time position until December 31, 2025

Reporting to the Project Lead - SEA, the Advocacy and Education Officer will lead awareness initiatives on human trafficking and labour exploitation, with a focus on supporting newcomer communities. In this role, you’ll develop and deliver workshops, provide trauma-informed, client-centered support, and connect individuals to essential services such as legal aid, housing, and employment resources. You’ll also collaborate with key stakeholders, advocate for systemic change, and apply social work principles to empower and protect vulnerable populations.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Community Education & Awareness
- Develop and deliver educational workshops, training sessions, and outreach programs to raise awareness about human trafficking and labour exploitation, particularly within newcomer communities
- Design and distribute educational materials, presentations, and resources tailored to various audiences, including newcomers, frontline workers, community groups, employers, law enforcement, and the general public
- Facilitate discussions on the rights of workers, the spectrum of exploitation, access to legal protections, and available community resources
- Provide education on recognizing and responding to human trafficking
- Conduct public awareness campaigns to promote safety and prevention strategies for at-risk populations
Client Support
- Provide trauma-informed, client-centered support to individuals who have experienced or are at risk of human trafficking and labour exploitation
- Conduct needs assessments and develop individualized support plans, connecting clients to legal, health, housing, and employment services
- Advocate for clients within legal and social systems, ensuring access to protection, benefits, and justice
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to facilitate holistic service delivery
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure ethical service provision in compliance with organizational and legal guidelines
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with law enforcement, legal aid, settlement services, and employment standards organizations to strengthen coordinated responses to human trafficking and labour exploitation
- Build and maintain partnerships with community agencies, government departments, and advocacy groups
- Participate in multi-agency networks, task forces, and committees focused on anti-human trafficking and worker rights advocacy
Data Collection & Reporting
- Track program data, document client interactions, and prepare statistical and narrative reports for funders and organizational leadership
- Evaluate program effectiveness and contribute to funding proposals and policy recommendations
Policy & Advocacy
- Stay informed on federal, provincial, and municipal policies related to human trafficking, labour rights, and immigration
- Contribute to policy advocacy initiatives to improve protections for trafficked individuals and exploited workers
- Identify systemic barriers and recommend policy changes to enhance client support services
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Community Development, Criminology, or related field (preferred)
- Social work background (preferred)
- Strong understanding of human trafficking, labour exploitation, and workers' rights in Canada
- Experience providing trauma-informed care and crisis intervention
- Excellent public speaking and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences
- Knowledge of community resources, legal protections, and immigration policies related to trafficking and labour rights
- Strong interpersonal and advocacy skills
- Proficiency in case management, data collection, and reporting
- Cultural competency and experience working with diverse and vulnerable populations
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database management
- Bilingualism or multilingual skills are an asset
Conditions of Employment:
- Legal authorization to work in Canada
- Flexible schedule required, including occasional evenings and weekends for outreach events as support for high needs clients may be required outside working hours
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required
- Travel throughout Newfoundland and Labrador is required
- Position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
