Job Summary:
The after-school Sport/Recreation Leaders will create a safe, positive, inclusive and engaging after school experience for students. Staff will work as team leaders, coach and facilitate school-based, sport and recreation activities, chaperone school-based sport and events.
Responsibilities:
Provide active supervision of students during all activities and transitions, ensuring safe environment for all program participants;
Plan, organize and implement culturally-relevant school-based recreation, sport, fitness and wellness activities/ games;
Assist with coaching school-based sports and chaperoning;
Provide a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for students;
Lead sport, fitness and recreational games;
Provide first aid in the event of an emergency or injury;
Serve as a role model by demonstrating positive attitude and promote positive social interactions;
Demonstrate fair judgment and respond appropriately to student interactions and conflicts that may arise;
Assemble, maintain and repair sport gear and game equipment;
Assist with school and community based events;
Prepare incident reports and logs for coordinator;
Maintain attendance records;
Adapt programming for inclusion of special needs participants;
Maintain a safe,clean and organized sport/activity space;
Liaise with coordinator for procurement of supplies/equipment for program activities;
Lead by example and form positive relationships with students and program staff;
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred, post secondary education, recreation an asset.
Must have experience working with children and youth (for ex: school setting/summer camp/recreation/coaching).
Ability to demonstrate leadership skills and ability to maintain control in challenging situations.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Fluency in English and Mi'kmaq
First Aid and WHMIS required or willingness to obtain upon hire.
Food handling certificate or willingness to obtain upon hire.
Willingness to take coaching certifications such as,archery, basketball, volleyball, etc.
Ability to work and communicate effectively with students, school staff, and parents.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of program participants, parents/guardians and school staff.
