Centered around the practice of a singular artist or a broader aesthetic movement, this selected topic course explores aspects of contemporary theatrical practice. This course may be taken multiple times.

THEME: Political Performance arts, 21st century
DESCRIPTION: This course examines the evolution of radical aesthetics in performance art from the late socialist and post-communist contexts of Central and Eastern Europe to their circulation within contemporary global cultural industries, focusing on performance as a form of political dissent, embodied resistance, and critique of state power. Through the work of artists such as Marina Abramović, alongside other European and Central European performance practitioners, visual artists, and street artists, students explore how radical aesthetics respond to censorship, nationalism, ideological transition, memory politics, and neoliberal transformation. The course emphasizes the interdisciplinary connections between performance art, visual culture, radical public interventions, and activist street practices, foregrounding politically engaged body-based and site-specific artistic forms as modes of resistance in contemporary post-communist Europe and beyond.

Requirements:

1. Ph.D. or Ph.D ABD in theater studies, or in a related field with a thesis in theater or performance studies.
2. Knowledge of contemporary theatre theory and performance analysis.
3. Pedagogical experience at the university level.
4. Record of research or scholarly work on the topic of the announced course.
5. Awareness of major current trends in Canadian and international theatre.
