Job Description - ARO Technician

Since September 2009, Whitecap has experienced remarkable growth, increasing production from 850 boe/d to over 365,000 boe/d. We have unconventional and conventional assets exclusively focused in Western Canada and the asset base includes the Weyburn EOR Project. As a majority owner and operator of the Weyburn EOR Project, annually we safely sequester approximately 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 making it a unique project within our portfolio. We currently employ 1,200 people, including our valued contract staff.

Position Overview:

This position will complement an existing team within HSE focused on providing technical support to the ARO team with respect to subsurface and surface abandonment activities across all Whitecap’s operational areas.

Key Job Accountabilities:

  • Initial set up of well abandonment, facility decommissioning, and pipeline abandonment projects for daily reporting in Petrosight.

  • Identify the scope of new abandonment projects and initiate the appropriate D56 notification process and required third-party agreements with Surface Land.

  • Regulatory reporting for all abandonment operations. This includes downhole and surface abandonment, facility decommissioning, SCFV/GM submissions into DDS, One Stop and BCER.

  • Updating internal systems to reflect equipment status changes following abandonment and decommissioning projects.

  • Engaging with asset teams to support the selection and review process for abandonment and decommissioning candidates.

  • Work with abandonment teams, Asset Integrity and Surface Land to identify sites with surface equipment remaining.

  • Assist the Manager of Asset Retirement with development of annual budget allocations and capital plans.

  • AFE management and support of the abandonment AFE process, including NOI type Non-Op AFE’s.

  • Complete annual mandatory reporting requirements in BC, AB, and SK.

  • Liaison with AER and BCER regarding Compliance and Closure Orders.

  • Management of all correspondence with OWA and working interest partners regarding WIPA agreements and internal working interest claims.

  • Assisting in development of reporting on ARO progress against forecasts, OPEX savings and other relevant program KPIs.

  • Establish workflow and coherent work processes to generate efficiencies.

  • Assisting with management and communication with contractors including onboarding, contracting, invoicing and management of contractors within health and safety   

Primary Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum 8-10 years of oil and gas related experience and experience.

  • Strong working knowledge of liability management programs, processes and requirements.

  • Ability to understand and process large volumes of data. Advanced skills with MS Excel and database work are an asset.

  • Technical post-secondary training in operations, production, geoscience, environmental studies, or engineering.

  • Ability to manage a team and portfolio of sites with strong communication skills and the ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to ever changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
