We are looking for a professional, outgoing and organized individual to join our Engineering team in the role of Assistant Chief Engineer at the DoubleTree West Edmonton.


The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for all maintenance in the Engineering department and ensuring the overall maintenance of the facility in support of a safe and welcoming hotel for all guests, visitors and team members. They assist the Director of Engineering and act as Director of Engineering in their absence.


We are looking for a leader who can help support the maintenance team and meet the needs of a very large property. Proven ability to build working relationships; results oriented, and natural problem solver are a few of the traits most suited to this position.


Major Responsibilities and Duties:



  • Consistently offer professional, friendly and engaging service - assisting guests regarding hotel facilities in an informative and helpful way

  • Performs preventative repairs, retrofits or other tasks as assigned by the Director of Engineering in a safe manner and within shop practices.

  • Oversees preventative maintenance and does repairs to all equipment and systems.

  • Assists shift engineers and/or the Director of Engineering with their assigned tasks as required.

  • Train, motivate and supervise maintenance associates to ensure performance and excellent service standards are achieved.

  • Orders parts and shop materials.

  • Delegates work orders and keeps a record of them.

  • Ensures parts and equipment levels are maintained to allow for work to proceed as soon as possible.

  • Ensures staff is trained in all aspects of the engineering department.

  • Is a member of the crisis response team as set out in the crisis response manual; responding in cases of fire, accident, safety concerns and calls for medical assistance

  • Conducts fire drills.

  • Keeps the Director of Engineering informed of events and requirements as they pertain to the engineering department and assists the Director of Engineering as required in these areas.

  • Stays within operating and payroll budget guidelines.

  • Assists Director of Engineering in developing operating, payroll, energy and capital budgets/expenses.

  • Assists with payroll, purchase orders, schedules and other duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer.

  • Attends all specified training meetings, departmental meetings and hotel general meetings.

  • Maintains safe working conditions within department and hotel

  • Ensures that all employees follow safety rules and procedures

  • Takes corrective action where required to improve safety of work areas

  • Is aware of and compliant with the latest Health & Safety policy

  • Correct and report any fire hazards or health and safety hazards

  • Keeps Director of Engineering promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance.

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in a timely and efficient manner in accordance with established company policies and procedures to achieve the overall objectives of this position.

  • Maintains a favorable working relationship with all other company employees to foster and promote a cooperative and harmonious working climate.

  • Works with external contractors/sub-contractors

  • At all times projects a favorable image of SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts to the public.

  • Follow department policies, procedures and service standards

  • Follow all safety policies


Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:



  • Excellent guest (customer) service skills

  • Willingness to go above and beyond, strong work ethic

  • Experience with general maintenance tools

  • Ability to push, pull, bend, reach upward, and kneel

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)

  • Must possess fundamental reading, writing and arithmetic skills.

  • Wide-range of electrical, plumbing and HVAC knowledge & aptitude (an asset)

  • Mechanical aptitude (an asset)

  • Must be proficient in standard office computer applications.

  • Proven, strong leadership qualities; ability to delegate tasks to team members and facilitate completion.

  • Current knowledge of Provincial Health and Safety Regulations.

  • Maintains a high level of professional appearance, demeanor, ethics and image.


Working Conditions:



  • Walking, standing, bending, crouching or stooping.

  • Frequently lifting 5 to 50 pounds, occasionally heavier lifting.

  • Occasional kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting

  • Occasional ascending or descending ladders, stairs and ramps

  • Works outdoors and indoors; occasionally in inclement weather.

  • Able to work a variety of shifts (days, evenings and weekends as required; also some on-call shifts.


Experience, Training and Education (demonstrating requirements):



  • Must display a positive, pro-active attitude.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years in a related position - building maintenance experience preferably within hotels.

  • Minimum of 2 years of previous supervisory experience required.

  • Proficiency with MS office.

  • Class 5 ticket in Building Maintenance

  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record (required)

  • Excellent work history and attendance record required. Must be flexible in his/her hours and work weekends, nights, and holidays and/or be on call when required.

  • First Aid & CPR certification an asset

  • Swimming Pool certification an asset

  • Fall Protection and Aerial Platform Lift training an asset
