Assistant Dockmaster/Docking Leadhand


Hourly - Point Hope Maritime, Victoria, British Columbia


 


Employment Type: Full Time – Union
Business Unit: Point Hope Maritime Ltd.
Location: Victoria, British Columbia
Reporting to: Dockmaster


Wage Rate: Dependent on relevant experience


Hours of Work: 40 hours/week


Work Setting: Marine


 


Point Hope Maritime (a Ralmax Group Company) has an exciting and immediate opening for a full-time Assistant Dockmaster in Victoria, British Columbia.

Responsibilities:


 


·         Assist the Dockmaster in leading a team to complete preparation for and the drydocking of multiple different types of vessels


·         Execute block builds to exacting standards


·         Adhere to workplace safety policies, regulations and compliances


·         Communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor to facilitate prompt correction or reporting


·         Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively


·         Safely operate power tools such as angle grinders, band saws, radial arm saw, table saw, circular saw, nail gun, etc.


·         Other duties within scope of the position, as assigned


 



Education and Experience


 


·         Experience in building block settings for drydocking


·         Ability to read, interpret and execute docking plans


·         Understand and interpret basic docking calculations


·         Understand basic hydrodynamics


·         Experience reading and interpreting draft marks and tide tables


·         Carpentry or other wood trade experience considered an asset


·         Welding and fabrication experience considered an asset


·         Willingness to participate in regular training programs and courses


·         Applicants with Drydock Training provided by DM Consulting will be considered priority over other candidates



Knowledge and Skills


 


·         A successful candidate will show exceptional leadership skills, including interpersonal relationship and professional communication skills with clients and coworkers


·         Knowledge and proficiency in trade specific terminology (e.g. port/starboard, stern/bow, list, trim, drydock, quay, graving dock, marine railway)


·         Understanding of how drydocking operations work


·         Candidates will show a great attention to detail


·         Be able to work in a fast-paced environment


·         Be available for overtime, split shifts, and shifts that may follow tidal patterns


·         Be able to maintain tight deadlines


·         Strong analytical and problem-solving skills


·         Ability to commit to and meet deadlines


·         Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing business needs


·         Mature, professional and optimistic attitude


·         Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment


·         Understand how to measure and interpret drawing in both standards of measurements (imperial & metric)


·         Ability to communicate, read, and understand/follow directions in English


·         Level 1 Rigging certificate is considered an asset


 


 


Requirements:


 


·         Candidates must have a forklift certificate, or related experience


·         Hold a minimum of a Canadian Pleasure Craft License (PCL)


·         Must be able to stand, crouch, kneel and/or sit for extended periods of time, able to lift up to 75 lbs. climb ladders and work from elevation, and walk on varied terrain


·         Regularly perform repetitive tasks


·         Ability to work within confined spaces


·         Possess manual dexterity


·         Possess coordination


·         Proficiency in tying knots


·         Basic understanding of vessel mooring



Work Conditions


 


·         Travel to off-site locations may be required


·         Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, etc.


·         Overtime as required


·         Hazards associated with the trade


·         Work outdoors in all weather conditions
