Job Description - Assistant Teacher - West85th

Overview

The Early Childhood Educator (ECE) is an equal member of a collaborative teaching team responsible for the care, supervision, and development of a consistent, assigned group of children. This is a group-based role rather than a room-based role; each ECE remains accountable for their cohort across all daily routines, environments, and transitions.

The junior program emphasizes predictable rhythms, relationship-based care, guided play, and growing independence through daily routines and self-help skills rather than formal lessons. All ECEs share responsibility for routines, safety and ratios, activity planning, active supervision, developmental documentation, and family communication. Educators work peer-to-peer without lead or assistant designations, coordinating decisions together and involving campus leadership only when required. Group assignments remain stable except for enrollment or age-based transitions.

  • Build secure, responsive relationships with each child.

  • Maintain consistent daily routines that support emotional regulation and independence.

  • Model and guide cooperation, independence, and self-regulation.

  • Set up and reset shared learning environments with colleagues.

  • Suggest materials and provocations that promote engagement and executive function.

3. Shared Group Accountability

  • Share full responsibility for supervision, safety, developmental support, documentation, and family communication for the assigned group.

  • Maintain continuity of care for the same children across all environments throughout the day.

4. Observation and Documentation

  • Observe children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development in daily play and routines.

  • Record milestones, progress, and emerging needs using centre systems.

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date developmental records collaboratively.

  • Contribute to written reports and parent meetings as required.

  • Provide clear handovers during breaks, naps, and shift changes.

  • Support substitute and float staff to follow group routines and safety needs.
