PulseMedica, an Edmonton-based start-up, is looking for an Optical Assembly Technician to join our world-class team. This person will be responsible for assisting our engineers by assembling our laser treatment and imaging devices, setting up bench top experiments, and maintaining lab equipment. They will work closely with both our Optical and Mechanical Engineering teams.

The ideal candidate is familiar with test equipment and proficient in optical alignment.

The Opportunity

Our Jr. Optical Systems Developer will be responsible for performing a variety of technical duties including performing functions associated with manufacturing operations. This position will support our engineers in set-up and calibration tasks, as well as performing rework and quality testing related to the production of parts, components, subassemblies and final assemblies. 

The Optical Systems Developer will use sophisticated programs and hardware to qualify and debug novel prototypes and equipment.. Duties may be related to execution of laboratory experiments, installation, maintenance, repair and support of manufacturing equipment, technical support of one or more production processes, product test and troubleshooting, and technical analyses and problem-solving. 

The person will be responsible for:

• Assist in the design and prototyping of optical, electromechanical, and optomechanical systems for ophthalmic imaging and surgical platforms.


• Generate, conduct, and document optical system test plans for qualification and debugging activities on devices.


• Support Senior Engineering activities, including development of optical software tools, development of laboratory optical instrumentation  including mechanical fixture conceptual design, Python, C++ or Matlab scripts to control and analyze optical instruments such as Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors, cameras, autocorrelators and motion control systems.


• Help create design specifications and component selection criteria for optical components (lenses, detectors, light sources, etc.). Interface with suppliers. 


• Use optical CAD software (CODEV, LightTools) to analyze and evaluate optical subsystems.


• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to integrate optical designs into products. 


• Build and maintain laser systems in a time-sensitive environment (alignment & diagnostics)


• Prepare and maintain technical reports, documentation, and presentations.


• Support regulatory and quality documentation related to optical design.


• Attend team meetings and engage in design reviews.


• Follow all company policies, including confidentiality, safety, and engineering procedures.


• Maintaining an organized and clean optics lab environment

Qualifications:  

• B.Sc. in Physics, Optics or Engineering


• Experience in mechanical, optical, electrical assembly preferred or equivalent education, however we would be willing to train the right candidate


• Experience working with manufacturing equipment/processes including optical splicing, optical alignment, epoxy dispensing, manual attachment of components, measurement systems as well as data gathering an asset


• Hands-on experience with the use of optical, and electrical test equipment an asset


• Basic familiarity with optical CAD software (e.g. CODEV, LightTools, and/or Zemax) an asset


• Experience with mechanical CAD software (SolidWorks, OnShape) an asset


• Excellent verbal and written communication


• Strong problem solving, analytical, and critical-thinking skills


• Ability to work with others as part of a team in fast-paced environment

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as a suitable candidate is found

Duration: Full time Permanent (40 hours per week)

Salary: Commensurate to experience and qualifications
