Job Description - Automotive/ Aviation Paint Technician

Company Description

Kenn Borek Air (KBA) is a diversified worldwide aircraft charter and leasing operation. The KBA team is currently seeking an Automotive/Aviation Pain Technician.

Job Description

The Paint Technician directly reports to the Paint Shop Manager for guidance on tasks, work priorities, and any issues that arise. They are responsible for communicating any challenges related to the painting process, materials, equipment, or safety concerns. The Paint Technician works closely with the Paint Shop Manager to resolve issues quickly and ensure smooth and efficient operations.

Major Responsibilities of the Role:

  • Perform sanding, masking, and prepping of aircraft components for spray applications, including composite and metal surfaces.
  • Install paint masks, stencils, and layout stripes and designs by hand using fine-line tape (or be willing to learn).
  • Assist in the painting of large wing and fuselage components, following industrial paint application standards.
  • Clean, sand, and prep surfaces for high-build applications, including the removal and reapplication of seam sealing as needed.
  • Apply metal prep, primer, base, and finish coats using approved chemical and spray application methods.
  • Ensure all surfaces are clean, free of debris and contaminants, and fully prepped prior to paint application.
  • Unmask painted parts, inspect for damage, and carry out necessary touch-ups and final detailing.
  • Complete all relevant documentation, inspection forms, and records associated with paint processes.
  • Follow all Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), safety protocols, company policies, and procedures.
  • Adhere to detailed product instructions and the Paint Shop Procedures Manual during all painting processes.
  • Conduct pre-paint inspections to identify missed masking, bodywork issues, seam sealing voids, or other prep discrepancies.
  • Coordinate closely with other painters and prep technicians, maintaining a collaborative and efficient workflow.
  • Be briefed on the scope of work when joining a project and follow the direction of the lead technician when applicable.
  • Maintain responsibility for the section or component being painted, ensuring it meets required standards.
  • Check and report inventory levels of paint and materials; maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area.
  • Properly use, maintain, and report issues with all tools, equipment, and hanging hardware.
  • Regularly inspect and calibrate spray equipment to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards across all paint shop areas, including storage and paint cabinets.
  • Identify and report any paint defects or process issues to the Paint Shop Manager immediately.
  • Support training efforts by sharing best practices with junior technicians, when needed, under guidance.
  • Work in coordination with other departments, such as production or maintenance, to maintain workflow continuity.
  • Ensure all safety protocols are followed, including safe ladder use and handling of materials around aircraft.
  • Manage time effectively and complete assigned projects on schedule without compromising quality.
  • Carry out any other related tasks as assigned by the Paint Shop Manager.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in spray painting, body shop, or factory painting (aircraft or automotive preferred).
  • Skilled in prepping, masking, sanding, and using HVLP spray guns.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical specifications.
  • Able to read and interpret paint design drawings.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures in paint or aircraft environments.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work well in a team.
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and working in physically demanding conditions.
  • Aviation Painter certification or Red Seal Automotive Refinishing certification is an asset.
