Band Building Maintenance

Job Purpose:

The employee in this position has a wide range of responsibilities and duties to ensure the maintenance and upkeep of the CLFN Band Buildings. The person hired for this position will report to the Band Building Coordinator directly and is meant to assist in various tasks inside and outside of the Band Buildings. The fundamental reason for this position is to help maintain the buildings integrity, safety, and security for all employees, staff, and community members that enter the Band Buildings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Adhere to all appropriate workplace regulations and legislation regarding health and safety, accommodation standards, and policy and procedures.


• Be continually aware of and maintain the highest standard of professionalism.


• Always maintain work area in a clean and professional manner, ensuring the proper supplies, proper tools, and equipment are readily available when needed for repairs.


• Inspect buildings and keep track of maintenance requirements for each of the band buildings. (Fire Hall-main office, the Admin. Office, Integrated Services, Elders Center, Daycare, Youth Center Trailer, Community Hall, English Bay Community Center + LRD shop office, the 4 buildings under Health Department, and PLC vacant)


• Keep track of inspection schedule and update as needed.


• Follow up with the provided documentation with your immediate supervisor on any/all requests made.


• Installation, repair, and maintaining the existing utility systems in all Band Building’s.


• Ensure the existing electrical systems and their components are maintained and in good working order.


• Ensure the existing heating, cooling, HVAC, and plumbing systems are maintained and in good working order.


• Maintenance and repair activities done according to priority. Keep detailed Daily work log and records of workplan.


• Discuss and plan your workplan with your immediate supervisor, meet regularly to ensure progression in maintenance requests and work orders.


• Keep an inventory of any material, equipment and supplies needed to address maintenance request. Place orders when needed with immediate supervisor.


• Maintain the surroundings of each building. Remove all scraps, heavy debris, and other refuse.


• Report adjustments and major repairs to heating, cooling, HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems to immediate supervisor in form of maintenance request.


• Any other duties or specified training as required/requested by immediate supervisor.


• Seasonal groundskeeping duties entail, shoveling snow, cutting grass, collecting garbage, and anything else to do with the grounds and surrounding areas of the Band Buildings.


• Follow the direction, and guidance of immediate supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

• Completion of grade 12 education, or combination of education and experience.


• A valid class 5 Alberta Drivers License an asset.


• Access to reliable transportation.


• Experience in reserve utility works, and the ability to perform all the duties outlined above.


• Physical agility and ability to complete duties requiring physical effort.


• The ability to complete duties in a safe manner, following established safety rules and regulations.


• The ability to maintain harmonious relationships between administration, staff, and community members, always maintaining professionalism.


• Knowledge of workplace health and safety (WHIMIS, MSDS, PPE, Etc.) considered an asset. Willingness to expand tickets and take updated courses as necessary and/or required.


• Strong interpersonal skills including communication, time management, multi-tasking, demonstrated confidentiality attributes, etc.


• Ability to work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment.


• Self-motivated work with little or no supervision.


• Knowledge of First Nations culture, government, languages, and community dynamics is considered an asset.


• Experience in building maintenance or related activity such as mechanical, electrical, heating, cooling, and plumbing systems is an asset.
  
  

Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:

• Physical agility and ability to complete duties that require physical effort.


• Monday – Friday for a total of 37.5 hours per week.


• Flexible hours of work, discuss with immediate supervisor.


• Doing repetitive tasks i.e., bending, stretching, reaching, etc.


• Working both outdoors and indoors. In office settings.


• Working in challenging situations that require critical thinking.


• Standing for extended periods of time.


• Lifting and moving heavy objects, and office furniture on a regular basis.


• Doing repetitive tasks with few breaks.


• Help with set up and take down for community events, such as but not limited to annual treaty days celebrations, community meetings, and workshops.
