Job Description - Building Maintenance/ Groundskeeper

The Tla’amin Nation is a modern, forward thinking, self-governing nation located on the beautiful upper Sunshine Coast (qathet Region). 



Position Summary


Job Type:                          Full-time, permanent


Hours of Work:                 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday to Friday


Reports to:                        Building Maintenance Coordinator


Department:                     Public Works & Capital Infrastructure


 


The Building Maintenance/Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the overall appearance, safety, and functionality of outdoor and facility spaces. This role involves landscaping, minor repairs, and general upkeep to ensure a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment.


 


Key Responsibilities


Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin policies, standards, practices, and procedures as directed by the Director of Public Works & Capital Infrastructure. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to members, clients, employees, and general matters of the Nation.


 


This role includes, but is not limited to:




  • Perform daily grounds maintenance, including mowing lawns, trimming hedges, raking leaves, and removing debris.

  • Keep walkways, parking areas, and outdoor spaces clean, safe, and well maintained.

  • Operate and perform basic upkeep on landscaping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and blowers.

  • Complete minor repairs and general maintenance tasks (e.g., painting, basic carpentry, pressure washing).

  • Conduct regular inspections of buildings and ground to identify maintenance issues and potential safety hazards.

  • Support seasonal maintenance activities such as snow removal, salting, and irrigation system checks and upkeep.

  • Assist with setting up and taking down equipment or spaces for events as needed.

  • Ensure tools, equipment, and supplies are properly stored, maintained, and in safe working condition.

  • Follow all safety procedures and promptly report any incidents or concerns.

  • Other duties as assigned.


 


Qualifications



Training, Education, Experience



  • Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent.

  • 1-2 years’ experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or related field.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

  • Prior experience working with Tla’amin Nation or other indigenous governments is an asset.

  • Acceptable Police Information Check prior to employment. 

  • Valid Drivers License and acceptable Driving Record.


 


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities



  • Basic knowledge of landscaping techniques and building maintenance.

  • Takes ownership of tasks and sees them through to completion.

  • Strong commitment to workplace and public safety, including ability to consistently follow safe work practices, policies, and procedures.

  • Proficient using hand tools and groundskeeping equipment.

  • Excellent work ethic, self-discipline, self-motivation and attendance.

  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • Ability to maintain attention to detail.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality and respectful service delivery within a small community.

  • Mechanically inclined with strong technical skills.

  • Strong problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision.

  • Strong cultural sensitivity with a deep respect for Tla’amin Nation culture, traditions and protocols. 


 


Working Conditions


Work will be completed primarily outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Physical demands include walking, bending, lifting up to 40 lbs., standing for the majority of the workday, and using hand tools and equipment. May require early morning, evening, and/or weekend work, dependent on operational needs.
