Job Description - Cabin Leader

Your Opportunity to SHINE ON:

At the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg, we believe that belonging is the heart of potential, and for more than 130 years, Camp Stephens—owned and operated by the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg—has brought this belief to life through exceptional overnight camp experiences on its island site in the heart of Lake of the Woods, near Kenora, Ontario. Guided by The Y Way and our commitment to Shine On Experiences, Camp Stephens fosters a culture where safety, inclusion, growth, and community are embedded in everything we do.

As a Cabin Leader, you are a vital member of our camp community. You will mentor and supervise a cabin group of campers, creating a safe, positive, and inclusive environment where young people can learn, grow, and build lifelong friendships. You will guide daily routines, lead outdoor adventures, and serve as a role model who embodies the YMCA-YWCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

WHY you’ll love Camp Stephens:

Working at Camp Stephens means being part of a values-driven, people-first culture grounded in inclusiveness, well-being, sustainability, and inspiration. You will live and work in a unique wilderness environment, build strong relationships with campers and peers, and contribute to life-changing outdoor experiences while being supported by a passionate leadership team that values belonging, learning, and personal growth.

HOW you’ll create Moments that Matter:

You will mentor and supervise a cabin group, fostering belonging and positive group dynamics while serving as a strong role model. You will plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate activities, ensure the physical and emotional safety of campers, and manage group dynamics with care and professionalism. You will also support camp-wide programming, maintain accurate documentation, and collaborate with co-leaders and staff to create a safe, seamless, and memorable camp experience.

You’ll bring:

  • Experience working with children or youth in a camp, educational, or recreational setting

  • Experience leading group activities, team-building initiatives, or outdoor programs

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with a positive, energetic presence

  • Knowledge of group facilitation, conflict resolution, and behaviour management techniques

  • Adaptability and strong problem-solving skills in dynamic, fast-paced outdoor environments

  • Ability to multitask, remain composed under pressure, and contribute both independently and as part of a team

  • Willingness to live and work in a remote outdoor setting with physically demanding tasks such as paddling, lifting, and carrying equipment

  • Commitment to completing the Y Winnipeg Camp Stephens Training Pathway (paid training provided if certifications are not yet obtained)

  • Required certifications: Bronze Cross (Bronze Medallion prerequisite assumed), Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C

How Y Winnipeg Supports Your Impact:

  • Compensation: $58.33 - $68.33 per day

  • Professional Development: Paid training and certification opportunities; applicants who do not yet have all required certifications are encouraged to apply, as training and support may be available

  • On-site Accommodation: Includes board and lodging while on trip

  • Wellness: Complimentary Y membership and access to Employee Assistance Program

  • A supportive, mission-driven environment where your leadership and contributions are valued
