CAD Designer 

1 Position Available 

Position Purpose and Objectives
The CAD Designer prepares engineering drawings and performs basic calculations to support the Applications Engineering Group. This role requires thorough knowledge of creating drawings in SolidWorks.

Primary Duties, 

• Review and consideration of information presented


• Design of engineered solutions incorporating Thordon’s products, designs, concepts and installation techniques

• Preparation of CAD part drawings and assemblies in SolidWorks and AutoCAD

• Coordination with manufacturing to ensure designs can be manufactured and are cost-effective

• Perform quality-checking activities of junior CAD Designers to ensure correctness and completeness

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Ability to read blueprints and engineering drawings required


• Must be computer literate with Microsoft Office, Database Applications, and SolidWorks


• Thorough Knowledge of SolidWorks PDM Vault system


• Ability to solve practical problems


• Ability to speak effectively to customers or employees of the organization


• Ability to multi-task and prioritize work as required

• Must be self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as part of a team

• Must be able to react to change productively and undertake other tasks as assigned


• Excellent communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications

• CET designation is preferred


• CAD 3D proficiency with Parts & Assemblies using SolidWorks


• Minimum 3 years’ experience with SolidWorks


• Minimum 3 years’ experience with AutoCAD


• Experience with seals, marine equipment, hydro turbines or pumps is an asset


• Thordon Product knowledge is an asset

Physical Demands

The role requires prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer workstation, including frequent use of a keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment. The employee must be able to view and analyze detailed drawings, plans, and specifications on screen for extended periods. The role also occasionally requires standing, walking, bending, and reaching to access files or equipment and collaborate with team members, as well as lifting and carrying office materials, drawings, or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Effective communication is required in person, by phone, and through virtual meetings.

Working Conditions

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  The employee is subject to office conditions most of the time.  Occasionally, the employee may be subjected to outdoor conditions, noise or other industrial hazards while visiting clients in shipyards or industrial facilities.
