Job Description - Camp Helper

Atlohsa Family Healing Services is seeking a motivated and dynamic individual to join the Southwest Healing Lodge as a Camp Helper. Reporting to the Healing Lodge Program Manager and using a wholistic Indigenous-led approach to principles of harm reduction and trauma-informed care, this person is responsible for supporting the Healing Lodge to ensure regular daily functioning of overnight and day programming.


 


The Southwest Healing Lodge functions to deliver addictions and wellness treatment through day and out-of-home care (three-week overnight program) for Indigenous peoples through a land-based healing program. Additionally, the Healing Lodge has a special focus on empowering families and the prevention and healing from gender-based violence.


 


Role and Responsibility




The Camp Helper will be responsible to:



  • Support with set-up and take-down of camp equipment including tents, cooking gear, land-based activities, etc.

  • Transporting gear to and from camp site.

  • Completing grocery shopping and other purchases as necessary for Healing Lodge programming.

  • Collaborate with Cultural Workers and Knowledge Keepers in setting up and running cultural programming.

  • Timely and thorough completion of require documentation for financial records and participant support.

  • Collaborate with team members to support day-programming responsibilities, such as Community Fridays, Sweats, Medicine Wheel, etc.

  • Occasional shift work to meet program needs.


Suitability



  • Experience working with individuals exposed to violence/abuse, homelessness, and mental health challenges is required.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs on a frequent basis.

  • Ability to act as Shkabewis or Firekeeper is an asset.

  • Knowledge of the Indian Residential School system that contributed towards the intergenerational trauma and impact of the Indigenous people of Canada.

  • Knowledge of colonialism, and the historical and ongoing impacts on Indigenous peoples.

  • Demonstrated strength in interpersonal relations, problem-solving, crisis prevention, group dynamics, and trauma-informed approaches.

  • Effective communication (written and verbal), interpersonal skills, and the ability to interact with others in a respectful manner as defined in the Atlohsa Code of Conduct.

  • Valid Ontario G-Class driver’s license, with clean driving record required.

  • First Aid and CPR certificate. 

  • A current Vulnerable Sector Check.

  • ICBOC or CCPC certifications are an asset.


EMPLOYMENT TERM: Permanent; full-time
CLOSING DATE: May 9, 2025
REMUNERATION: 



  • $25.00 per hour

  • Three (3) weeks vacation

  • 12 self-development days per year

  • 12 sick days per year

  • 100% employer provided benefits, including healthcare, dental, and vision

  • Employer provided pension plan.
