Canada - Senior Closure Manager

Position Description

The objective of this role is to lead safe, timely, and cost-effective management of Barrick’s legacy sites in Ontario and Quebec.  The focus of the role is to mitigate risk and long-term liability through disciplined planning and execution of post-closure performance assessments and adaptive management projects.  The incumbent must effectively manage relationships with consultants, contractors, technical experts, regulators, First Nations partners, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with legal requirements and alignment with Barrick’s business and sustainability goals. The position requires strong planning, team leadership, budgeting, and project management skills. This is a hybrid role with regular travel required to Barrick’s legacy sites in Ontario and Quebec.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide visible safety leadership aligned with Barrick’s Zero Harm Workplace commitment.
• Develop and lead implementation of final closure strategies for legacy sites, including regulatory pathways, stakeholder engagement, development of post-closure success criteria, and performance monitoring. 
• Lead safe, timely, and cost-effective project execution, including earthworks, infrastructure upgrades, reclamation, and technical studies, ensuring alignment with scope, schedule, budget, safety, and regulatory requirements.
• Provide operational oversight at legacy sites, including coordination of consultants, contractors, and site personnel.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate operational, regulatory, technical, and stakeholder risks.
• Manage budgets, schedules, resources, and project reporting, providing updates and recommendations to internal leadership.
• Lead and support community, government, First Nations, regulatory, and other stakeholder engagement on closure matters.
• Act as Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE) for tailings facilities and ensure conformance with Barrick’s Tailings Management Standard and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management. 
• Identify opportunities to redevelop or divest legacy sites in support of portfolio optimization.
• Build team capability through effective communication, collaboration, resource planning, and succession development.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Professional Qualifications

• Post-secondary qualifications in environmental science, civil/environmental engineering, chemistry, mining or related technical field required, with a professional designation (P.Eng., P.Geo.) preferred.
• Project management credentials are considered a strong asset.

Experience Requirements

• 12+ years of experience in mining environmental management, with specific experience in mining, extractive industries, or industrial operations, including operating, closure, and post-operational sites.
• Demonstrated expertise in mine closure and reclamation, including water management, tailings management, long-term environmental risk management, and closure performance evaluation.
• Working knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial regulatory and permitting requirements, particularly those applicable to mine closure activities in Ontario and Quebec.
• Strong project management capabilities, including developing and executing project plans, budgets, and teams. 
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver projects safely in accordance with approved schedule and budget.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams, with demonstrated ability to build, coach, influence, and collaborate effectively with direct reports, indirect reports, peers, and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Knowledge of geotechnical principles related to tailings storage facility maintenance and monitoring is considered an asset.

The salary range for this position is CAD $148,000 – $165,000.
