Job Description - Casual Personal Support Workers

Position:  Casual Personal Support Workers (PSWs)  Hospice is currently looking to develop a pool of Casual Personal Support Workers, (PSWs)


Hourly Wage Range:  $25.23 to $26.19 per hour, depending on Palliative Care Experience, plus applicable shift premium 


Pension Plan: Successful candidates are eligible to enrol on a voluntary basis in the Pension Plan HOOPP, (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan) 


Role Overview:  


The Personal Support Worker (PSW) is responsible for providing assistance with all activities of daily living, as well as providing end-of- life care to residents and their families. The PSW is also responsible for fostering an environment that is safe and home-like.


Key Accountabilities:


Under the direction of the Registered Nurse/Registered Practical Nurse, the PSW assumes the responsibility for providing direct care to the resident according to the care plan in the following areas:


Bathing:



  • Assist or provide hygiene through a bed bath, sink bath or tub bath.

  • Assist with oral hygiene by cleaning dentures, assisting with brushing teeth and/or gums and providing additional mouth care as necessary.

  • Assist with or provide hair washing as required. May use medicated shampoo and bath soaps as ordered.

  • Provide peri-care in accordance with continence needs of the resident.

  • Assist with fingernail and toenail care of the non-diabetic resident.

  • May apply over the counter topical creams and ointments according to pharmacy instructions.


Dressing:



  • Assist with or dress the resident according to his/her choice of clothing and timing.

  • Assist with bedtime care of the resident.

  • Assist with the care and storage of their clothing, as required.


Toileting:



  • Provide a safe and direct route to the resident’s bathroom.

  • Provide commode, bed pan or urinal as requested in an appropriate and timely manner.

  • Provide basic colostomy care and catheter care (ie: emptying catheter)


Transferring:



  • Assist resident requiring help to move from one piece of equipment or furniture to another according to the determined method identified for that resident. Transferring directions are determined by the RN/RPN and will be noted in the resident’s care plan.

  • Mechanical lifts must be used when the need has been identified by the RN/RPN and the PSW has been taught the procedure.


Feeding:



  • Assist in the delivery, set-up and feeding of residents as required.

  • Monitor resident for difficulties chewing and swallowing and report to RN/RPN.

  • Encourage and assist resident in his/her eating by recognizing likes and dislikes.

  • Provide oral care /denture care after meals and as required.

  • Do not force resident to eat or swallow food or beverages.

  • Provide nutritional supplements as directed by RN/RPN.


Additional Duties:



  • Maintain a tidy and safe workplace.

  • Stock care needs supplies in resident’s rooms, tub room, care cart

  • Empty waste basket in resident’s room, bathroom, common areas

  • Light housekeeping in resident’s rooms, hallway if required.

  • Terminal cleaning of resident’s room if no housekeeping available during the day and after hours in preparation for admission as determined and directed by the supervisor on duty (RN/ RPN), Director of Resident Care or designate. 

  • Laundry needs for the Hospice and residents of the Hospice, as determined by the Director of Resident Care or designate.

  • Assist with ambulation and range of motion or other passive exercises as requested.

  • Assess need for Registered staff assessment.

  • Apply dry protective dressings as directed by Registered staff.

  • Provide care of body after death.

  • Provide emotional support to resident and family as appropriate.

  • Assist with the writing of policies and procedures as requested.

  • Meal preparation at those times a volunteer might not be available in the kitchen.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required.


Education and Experience:



  • 3 to 5 years previous experience as a PSW

  • PSW diploma or certificate is preferred

  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals and their families in providing end-of- life care

  • Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care Certificate of Completion, or commitment to complete within 2 years from start date.


Language Skills:



  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated computer skills.

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

  • Ability to write simple correspondence.

  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group settings.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team. Demonstrated relationship management skills consistent with the mission, vision and values of St. Joseph’s- Hospice of London
