Job Description - Child and Youth Support Worker (on call, casual)

 


The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is a member of the Maa-nulth Treaty Society and, through the Maa- nulth First Nations Final Agreement, is a modern treaty Nation operating with a government-to- government relationship with Canada and the province of British Columbia. As a Self-Governing Indigenous Government, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government continues to promote education and community programs that enhance Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ identity.


Position Summary


The Department of Huuḥtakšiiḥinʔaała (Education and Youth) is seeking enthusiastic and reliable on-call Child and Youth Support Workers to assist with and/or lead after-school programs, Pro-D Day activities, and seasonal camps.


 


These positions support programs that focus on recreation, land-based learning, and cultural connection for children and youth ages 7 to 16.


Key Responsibilities



  • Lead and support the delivery of engaging, age-appropriate programming for children and youth.

  • Provide active supervision and guidance, ensuring safety and positive participation in all activities and outings.

  • Respond calmly and effectively to first aid situations or safety concerns, following established emergency procedures and reporting protocols.

  • Model positive relationships, healthy lifestyles, and respectful communication.

  • Take initiative in setting up, cleaning up, and organizing materials and program spaces.

  • Incorporate cultural, recreational, and land-based activities that reflect Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ values.

  • Follow established program safety practices and align with relevant standards from the Child Care Licensing Regulation where appropriate.

  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.


Qualifications


Training, Education and Experience



  • Responsible Adult Certification preferred (ECEA, ECE, or Diploma/Bachelor in CYC an asset)

  • Experience supporting children in group settings such as camps, schools, or afterschool programs.

  • Familiarity with diverse learning styles, sensory needs, or behavior support is an asset.

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ values, teachings, and cultural protocols

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills

  • Valid First Aid/CPR-C (or willingness to obtain before start date)

  • Clear Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector screening

  • Class 4 Driver’s License considered an asset

  • Kind, calm, and grounded in relationship-based approaches.

  • Strong communication skills with both youth and adult team members.

  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and staying active throughout the day.

  • Ability to adapt and respond to changing needs while maintaining a positive attitude.

  • Lifestyle consistent with the importance and responsibilities of the position

  • Ability to identify crisis situations and help

  • Mediation and conflict management

  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Demonstrate tact, discretion, and sound judgment

  • Ability to work adjusting schedules and overtime when required

  • Ability to carry out a variety of physically demanding duties

  • Genuine respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ traditions, culture and protocols


 


Working Conditions



  • This is an on-call position, with work available during after-school hours, full-day Pro-D Days, and seasonal youth camps (spring, summer, winter).

  • Work takes place in indoor and outdoor settings, including forests, shoreline areas, and gym-based environments.

  • The role involves an active, high-energy atmosphere with moderate lifting and extended outdoor time in all weather conditions.

  • Staff are expected to maintain a safe and supportive environment, identifying and addressing safety concerns promptly and providing first aid when required.

  • Occasional local travel or overnight trips may be required for camps, cultural programming, or community events.

  • Some flexibility may be needed for early mornings, late pickups, or weekend events.

  • Staff work as part of a supportive and collaborative team, alongside Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and other youth staff.

  • Shifts may be offered on short notice depending on program needs.
