Job Description - Civil Construction - Pipelayer

We’re not just in the business of moving dirt. We build the foundations that communities grow on. From roads and bridges to underground utilities and mine infrastructure, MacKay takes on the civil construction projects others avoid.

With over 40 years of proven performance, we continue to expand across Western Canada — and we’re looking for skilled Pipelayers who take pride in precision, safety, and getting the job done right the first time.

How You’ll Contribute

As a Pipelayer at MacKay, you play a key role in building the underground infrastructure that keeps communities running. Water, sewer, and storm systems — what you install today supports families and businesses for decades to come.

Working closely with the Civil Foreman and utilities crew, you’ll ensure installations are completed safely, accurately, and in alignment with project drawings and production targets. Your attention to grade, elevation, and quality directly impacts the long-term success of every project.

This isn’t just pipe in the ground — it’s critical infrastructure done right.

What You’ll Get to Do

  • Perform work in accordance with all organizational, provincial, and federal health and safety standards, upholding the highest safety expectations
    • Conduct daily site assessments and identify potential hazards
    • Ensure all tools and materials required for the day are on site and in proper working order
    • Prepare excavation areas for pipe installation, including slope and elevation determination
    • Install and operate instruments such as lasers, grade rods, and transit levels to confirm alignment and grade
    • Install pipe to exact specifications while maintaining production targets and quality standards
    • Excavate trenches using equipment or manual methods as required, ensuring compliance with construction drawings and specified depths
    • Grade and level trench bases using tamping equipment or hand tools
    • Place manholes, catch basins, and related underground structures
    • Tap and drill into existing pipes to introduce auxiliary services or devices
    • Conduct required testing, including infiltration, exfiltration, pressure, and bacteriological testing
    • Locate existing pipes requiring repair or replacement using magnetic or radio indicators
    • Maintain accurate site records, including as-built information, documentation, and site photos
    • Provide general manual labor assistance as required to support the crew
    • Maintain organizational services, facilities, tools, and equipment
    • Care for company equipment, including light vehicles
    • Maintain a professional image of personnel, equipment, vehicles, and job sites at all times

Who You Are

You’re detail-oriented and take pride in precise work. You understand that what’s underground matters just as much as what’s visible. You stay calm under pressure, work well with your crew, and show up ready to contribute every day.

You have:

  • Previous pipelaying experience (civil construction experience is a strong asset)
    • The ability to read and interpret construction drawings and design plans
    • A valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence
    • Strong initiative and a positive, team-focused attitude
    • The ability to give and follow both written and verbal instructions
    • The ability to work in confined spaces
    • The ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
    • Physical capability to lift up to 23 kg (50 lbs.)
    • Flexibility with work hours, including overtime and weekends when required
    • Willingness to travel out of town depending on project needs
    • The ability to remain composed and professional in high-pressure environments
    • A cooperative attitude and the ability to accept feedback constructively

What’s In It for You

Your home base will be our Cranbrook office at 1600A Theatre Road, however your time will primarily be spent on active project sites — both in town and out of town, depending on where the work takes us.

Hours will vary based on project requirements, with overtime as needed to keep projects on schedule.

  • Competitive compensation
    • Opportunities for growth and development
    • Hands-on work building essential infrastructure
    • A team environment that values safety, quality, and accountability
