Friends of Ruby is dedicated to supporting the well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth aged 16-29 through mental health services, social programs, and housing. We operate a Youth Drop-In Centre, offering barrier-free counselling, hot meals, and community programming, and a Transitional Home, providing emergency and long-term housing with life-skills support.

About the Role 


As a Clinical Counsellor
your responsibilities will be 
 



  • Individual & Group CounsellingCreate treatment plans, deliver short-term, therapeutic counselling using evidence-based practices (e.g., MBCT, DBT, ACT, MBSR, Trauma-Informed Care, etc.), and facilitate group therapy programs. 



  • Crisis Intervention & Safety Planning – Conduct risk assessments, provide same-day crisis counselling, create safety plans, and participate in the on-call crisis line rotation to support participants. 



  • Collaborate with Multidisciplinary TeamsPartner with case workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals to provide comprehensive care tailored to participants' needs. 



  • Program & Resource Coordination – Connect participants to internal Friends of Ruby programs when appropriate and external service providers as needed. 



  • Team Engagement & Conflict Resolution – Support overseeing the drop-in space, de-escalate conflicts/situations, and monitor the overall physical and emotional safety of the space. 



  • Clinical Documentation & Administration – Complete intake assessments, maintain clinical records and actively participate in team meetings and individual/group clinical supervision. 


 


What You Bring 



  • Master’s degree in
    Social Work, Psychology, Psychotherapy, Counselling Psychology, or in a related field and/or comparable work experience. 



  • Current membership in good standing in the College of Social Workers and Social Service Worker, College of Registered Psychotherapists (e.g., RSW, RP, etc.), or other counselling colleges. 



  • Experience
    supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPOC youth in issues related to mental health, trauma, disorders of eating, violence, self-injurious behavior, transitioning and/or coming out, substance use, family support and relationships.
     



  • Ability to conduct crisis risk assessment and interventions, and safety planning, with the
    capacity to manage conflict, crises, and escalating situations with composure and confidence.
     



  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, harm reduction, anti-racism, anti-oppression, strengths-based, trauma-informed, and participant-centered practices. 



  • Ability to provide both individual and group counselling utilizing Evidence Based Practices and/or modalities (e.g., MBCT, CBT, DBT, ACT, MBSR, Trauma-Informed Care, etc.). 



  • Experience supporting participants with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) is considered an asset. 



  • Experience conducting comprehensive, strengths-based clinical assessments and developing individualized care plans that are culturally responsive and adaptable to client lived experience, progress, and evolving needs.
     



  • A
    strength in using active listening, open-ended dialogue, and nonjudgmental language to create a safe space where youth feel heard, validated, and empowered.

What We Need 



  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check clearance. 



  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada. 



  • Must maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate occasional evening work and organizational needs.  



  • Willing to travel to various community-based settings, with and without clients.
