Job Title: Clinical Counsellor (Child and Youth)
Location: St. John’s, NL
Position Type: 1 full-time position
Closing date: April 09, 2025
Reporting to the Mental Health and Health Services Manager, the Clinical Counsellor (Children and Youth) is responsible for providing clinical counselling services to children and youth of ANC families experiencing challenges in mental health, the impact of trauma, and complex psychosocial issues as well as occasional adult counselling as needed. The Clinical Counsellor (Children and Youth) will also be responsible for scheduling individual counselling, drop-in counselling, group sessions, working with families and providing presentations.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive client assessments to determine client’s needs and determine appropriate model of counselling
Perform counselling in individual and group settings
Refer to and collaborate with the Settlement Team and external community partners for a coordinated effort focused on the client’s overall wellbeing
Build client relationships to arrive at a position of trust while respecting religious and cultural backgrounds and addressing specific needs
Maintain case files, statistics, and stakeholder reports according to deadlines
Request interpretation as needed and schedule counselling appointments
Actively participate in local and national committees and workshops to share information and build knowledge of best practices
Develop and perform presentations for clients, staff, and community partners
Qualifications and Experience:
Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or counselling
Experience in clinical counselling
Demonstrated experience counselling children, youth, and adults who may have experienced challenges such as conflict related trauma, complex medical and psychosocial issues, violence, mental health, and addictions
Skilled in crisis intervention and conflict resolution
Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity working with diverse client groups
Strong presentation and group facilitation skills
Demonstrated ability to prioritize referrals and multi-task
Effective prioritization and time management skills
Knowledge of virtual counselling, documentation, and confidentiality practices
Competency in case file management
Ability to work on tight deadlines, prioritize and multitask
Understanding the principles of cultural humility
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with team members and community partners
Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Conditions of Employment:
Legal authorization to work in Canada
Current good standing with the appropriate professional/licensing body
Valid class 5 NL driver’s license and daily access to a reliable vehicle is required
Flexible to work outside of core hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm)
Position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
