Job Description - Clinical Director - Addictions & UHN Partnership

CAMH's new strategic plan, Connected CAMH 2024-2030 has laid out a bold vision for advancing care through discovery and education, getting upstream to provide care earlier, and lifting society to impact mental health justice. The implementation of this plan calls for ways to ensure access to care within CAMH and to support through partners in the community. It also focus on quality and experience, ensuring a seamless path for patients during their care with CAMH. To support the implementation of the new strategy, a new leadership role is being established to lead our important work in addictions care.

This new position will provide focused leadership to the Addictions program care at CAMH. This includes all services in a dedicated inpatient Medical Withdrawal Service unit) and several outpatient clinics including the Rapid Access Addiction Medicine clinic (RAAM). As Clinical Director you will work in a close dyad model with the Chief of Addictions Medicine at CAMH to support the strategic and operational components of this program. In addition, the Director will have a role with our emerging partnership with UHN to better support physical health needs of patients in our care at CAMH (broadly) as well as opportunities to collaborate with UHN to support patients in their care requiring addictions care.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Clinical Care the Clinical Director will provide strong contemporary leadership to all health care professionals and administrative staff who report in to the program. The Clinical Director will achieve this by collaborating with all stakeholders in the development and articulation of a future-oriented vision for the program and by effectively directing the activities of all of the component units of the program to achieve the stated vision. The Clinical Director will ensure the delivery of high quality patient care, health science education and research integration, and the cost-effective management of all financial, clinical, and human resources within the program. The Clinical Director also participates actively as a member of the hospital leadership in the development and implementation of broad corporate goals and objectives and the development of strategies to achieve them.

Key requirements:
  • The Clinical Director leads a multidisciplinary team, providing guidance and support to mental health professionals, while fostering a patient-centered approach and promoting a culture of continuous improvement in mental health services. They provide strong leadership to inter-professional staff, and administrative staff in alignment with the Mission, Vision and Values of CAMH. The Clinical Director works in a dyad with the Chief of the division to provide overall leadership for the program.
  • Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Clinical Care / or Vice President, Clinical Operations collaborates with the Professional Practice Office, Director, Clinical Quality and other key organizational leaders, to enhance excellence in practice and professional standards, quality of care, efficient and effective fiscal resource management, safety and risk management, program planning, change management and service excellence and evaluation.
  • The Clinical Director advances the concepts, infrastructures, human resources and relationships required for a programmatic focus. This work involves strong collaborations with leadership colleagues across CAMH, and with partners in the health system for to develop and deliver programming that meets the needs of patients and families. The Clinical Director is accountable for developing and implementing strategies that create a supportive environment to advance education and research. For example, this includes ensuring collaboration with clinical and research teams to support patients participation in clinical trials should they choose.
  • Clinical Directors are responsible for the financial management across the portfolio of programs, from both an operational and strategic perspective, creatively using strategies to direct resources to where they are needed.
  • The Clinical Director supports the achievement of the goals of an academic health science centre as it relate to education and research. This includes supporting and assisting education and clinical research leads in navigating access to programs and teams to support their efforts. For clinical research, it includes supporting managers and staff to ensure participation in research opportunities is available to patients.
  • You will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork, student learning and complies with all applicable and regulatory requirements.
  • The Clinical Director is a member of the Clinical Leadership Team (CLT) at CAMH, that unites all dyad Leaders of clinical programs across CAMH together with the SVP Clinical Care, Chief Medical Officers, and Chief Nursing Executive to strategically advance the strategy for CAMH, ensure high quality care and develop strong health system partnerships.
This position requires a seasoned health care leader with both strategic and operational experience in a health care environment. The ideal candidate has a particular passion for advancing care, research and education related to substance use disorders, and addictions care. They also bring experiences from other aspects of health care, and strong knowledge of the broader health system. The candidate requires a Master's Degree in a Clinical, Healthcare, Health Policy or Social Services discipline from a recognized institution. A minimum of 5 years of progressive clinical managerial experience. Clinical experience in mental health, and/or concurrent disorders treatment is an asset. You have a demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate on programming and programming delivery and extensive healthcare experience, with a strong focus on implementation of evidence based practices. You will also possess strong negotiation and communication skills, combined with an awareness of professional roles and functions of diverse disciplines within integrated clinical teams, and can effectively liaise with external programs and agencies.

You demonstrate a commitment to safety of both staff and clients. Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and communities is essential. You have demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). In addition, you possess excellent organizational, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills and have the ability to work effectively within a dynamic team environment. Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.

Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Please Note: This full-time, permanent position is NOT part of any bargaining unit
