Job Description - Communication Disorders Assistant

Are you passionate about supporting children and families to build strong communication skills?



FIREFLY is seeking a regular full time Communications Disorder Assistant (or Communication Assistant) to support Speech-Language Pathology services across our region.  This role plays a key part in helping children and families access high-quality, coordinated care.

FIREFLY is a multi-service, non-profit organization committed to strengthening the health and well-being of children, youth, and families.  We provide community-based, mental health, and developmental services across Northwestern Ontario in partnership with families, schools, child care centres, and community organizations.



About the Role


As a Communication Disorders Assistant (CDA) or Communication Assistant, you will work as part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team to support the delivery of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) services.  You will implement therapy plans, support program delivery, and help create engaging materials for children, families and care providers.  Reporting to the Clinical Manager, you will:



  • Support speech-language and/or hearing screening activities.

  • Administer treatment plans developed by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs).

  • Assist with client programming and provide informal documentation and reporting.

  • Prepare therapy materials, home programs, and resources for families and classrooms.

  • Support communication between clinicians, families, and community partners.

  • Participate in team meetings and training as required.

  • Travel within communities to support services in homes, schools, and community settings as needed.

  • Perform other duties as required.


 


What We're Looking For


Education & Experience



  • Preferred: Diploma in Communication Disorders Assistant (CDA) program.

  • Alternate Consideration: A related diploma/degree (e.g. Early Childhood Education, Health Sciences, Social Services, or equivalent) with relevant experience.

  • Experience working with children with communication or developmental needs is an asset.

  • Experience working in or with community-based programs is an asset.



Skills & Competencies



  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to follow structured treatment plans and work under clinical supervision

  • Strong organization and time management skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Creativity in supporting child development and engagement

  • Sensitivity to the needs of children, families, and diverse communities

  • Cultural awareness, with understanding of First Nation communities is considered an asset

  • Strong documentation and computer skills

  • Flexibility to travel and work across settings




Conditions of Employment:



  • Valid Driver's Licence and ability to travel within Northwestern Ontario

  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screen

  • Ability to manage a reasonable workload with effective prioritization and follow-up

  • Ability to support a respectful and safe workplace

  • Some evening and weekend work may be required from time to time
