Job Description - Communications Advisor

Hiring preference will be provided to those who identify as Yukon First Nation or Indigenous. 



The First Nation School Board (FNSB) was established in February 2022. Our main office is located in Whitehorse, Yukon, on the traditional territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council. FNSB serves and works in partnership with Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation, Liard First Nation, Ross River Dena Council, Champagne and Aishihik First Nation, White River First Nation, Ta'an Kwäch'än Council, Kwanlin Dün First Nation, Selkirk First Nation, Carcross/Tagish First Nation, and Kluane First Nation for the schools and Learners on their territories.
 
Our approach to instruction, programming, and operations promotes reconciliation by being grounding in Yukon First Nations values of student-centered, strengths-based, and community-led. Board-run schools are for all Yukon students.

The Communications Advisor plays a key role in strengthening clear, respectful, and culturally- grounded communication across the First Nation School Board (FNSB) and its school communities, including staff, Learners, families, partners, and the public. Reporting to the Director of Policy and Communications, this role leads the development and implementation of communication strategies aligned with the Board’s mission, vision, and values, and manages a wide range of external and internal communication products such as websites, social media, newsletters, events, media relations, and promotional materials.


 


The Communications Advisor supports transparency, collaboration, and engagement by delivering timely, accurate, and accessible information, maintaining brand standards and communication policies, and continuously evaluating communication approaches to ensure effectiveness and cultural responsiveness. With a strong commitment to Learner’s success and Yukon First Nations pedagogy, this role integrates Indigenous ways of knowing, storytelling, and relationship-based practices into all communications products, fostering meaningful connections and positive partnerships that reflect the unique cultures, languages, and priorities of FNSB communities.

We seek applicants with considerable experience building strong and trusting relationships with partners while providing strategic advice and guidance. Comfort in the unknown and a desire to create new processes, paired with expertise in interpreting and applying legislation, regulations and policy will support the you to be successful in this role Regular travel throughout the Yukon is a requirement of the position.
