Client Service Results:
The Communications Coordinator supports the development and delivery of internal and external communications for Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey. This role is responsible for promoting MK initiatives, programs, and events through a variety of platforms, while ensuring communications reflect and respect Mi’kmaw language, culture, and values. The Coordinator works collaboratively with staff, communities, and partners to strengthen engagement, share knowledge, and support language and education priorities across Mi’kmaw communities.
Summary of Duties:
Assist the Communications Lead and the Director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mi’kmaw Education
Develop, write, and edit communications materials (e.g., newsletters, reports, social media content, website updates, and promotional materials)
Coordinate and implement communications strategies to support MK programs, events, and initiatives
Maintain and monitor MK’s social media platforms and website content, ensuring content is current, engaging, and responsive to audiences
Support the planning and promotion of events, gatherings, and language initiatives
Collaborate with program staff, community partners, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers to gather and share stories and updates
Ensure communications are culturally respectful, accurate, and aligned with Mi’kmaw values and language revitalization efforts
Maintain communications calendars, contact lists, and distribution channels
Support documentation of projects (photos, videos, written summaries)
Monitor and report on communications engagement and effectiveness
Education/Experience:
Post-secondary diploma or degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field
An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered
Knowledge of or experience working with Mi’kmaw communities, language, or culture is considered a strong asset
Experience with social media platforms and digital communications
Skills:
Passion for the Mi’kmaw language
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write reports, correspondence, and content for diverse audiences
Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and digital/content creation tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite)
Strong research skills using a variety of sources
Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with diverse stakeholders
Cultural competency and understanding of Mi’kmaw values, protocols, and language revitalization efforts
Comfort with public-facing communications, including being on camera
Photography, videography, and basic editing skills are an asset
Close attention to detail and the ability to maintain confidentiality
Knowledge:
Mi’kmaw culture and traditions
General office administrative practices
Personal Suitability:
Work effectively in a team environment
Willingness to work on evenings and weekends when required
