About the Role
The Communications Technologist is a versatile individual contributor role, responsible for carrying out various telecommunication design jobs. This role requires proficiency in at least two or more types of design work, which the candidate should be able to perform independently.
Responsibilities
Prepare and interpret engineering designs, drawings, and specifications: Perform drafting and design for outside plant telecommunications, including civil, cable, and pole line design for fibre networks, copper, coax cable, HFC, radio frequency, or small cell designs
Conduct or supervise the installation, commissioning, and operation of electrical and electronic equipment and systems: Execute inside or site-specific internal structured wiring, physical and/or transport and network layer design
Carry out applied research in fields of electrical and electronic engineering and physics: Utilize CAD software for 2-D drafting to support designs
Collect, compile, and analyze data and information to help in design and engineering projects: Conduct site visits and use technology to collect measurements, observations, and photos
Supervise, monitor, and inspect projects to ensure compliance with specifications and standards: Manage projects from inception to completion, including planning, status monitoring, addressing issues, and ensuring outcomes are achieved
Communicate effectively with team members, clients, and other stakeholders: Build positive relationships with team members, clients, developers, and other external stakeholders
Requirements
Relevant experience: 2-3 years of experience in drafting and designing work for civil, utility, or telecom-related projects
Educational background: College/CEGEP diploma in Civil drafting and civil engineering CAD/CADD, Telecommunications technology/technician, Electrical/electronics drafting and electrical/electronics CAD/CADD, or CAD/CADD drafting and/or design technology/technician
Exposure to design methods: Familiarity with various design methods such as GPON, FTTx, Building Entrances, MDU, Civil, Copper, Pole Lines, Feeder Fibre, Relocations, or other Outside Plant Design types
Proficiency in software tools: Experience with Google Suite (Gmail, Google Meet, Google Sheets, Google Drive) or equivalent Microsoft apps
Technical knowledge: Working knowledge of utility locators like the Radiodetection RD8100PDL, 3M DYNATEL 2273, etc
Drafting skills: Proficient in drafting software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or Bluebeam
