Under the direction of the Health Director, the Community Health Nurse will work as part of the community health team. The Community Health Nurse will combine their health sciences knowledge with assessment skills, clinical nursing skills, and program planning abilities to successfully implement a variety of mandatory and auxiliary community health programs. The Community Health Nurse will work with community members and staff to identify health priorities and plan programs to address these needs. They will facilitate the planning of activities and strategies to achieve healthy outcomes in the community of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg. Based on public health principles, the Community Health Nurse participates in the provision of a full range of comprehensive health programs which include health promotion, illness prevention and health protection across the lifespan.
Preferable skills & Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor of Nursing degree from Canadian University or recognized equivalent; or
Certificate or Diploma in Community Health Nursing from Canadian University or recognized equivalent
Diploma in Nursing from a recognized educational institution coupled with current nursing experience
Experience working in Indigenous community
Necessary Knowledge:
Knowledge of traditional health care beliefs and practices of indigenous people and support the use of these beliefs by community members
Ability to coordinate with local and regional health and social service programs

Duties & Responsibilities:
The Community Health Nurse shall:
Implement the existing Community Health Plan and Community Health Nurse components
Participate in strategic planning and creation of future Community Health Nurse strategic plans
Provide minor treatment as required, as well as refer to other health care agencies as needed
Implement various programs including immunization, communicable disease, school health, Canada prenatal nutrition, healthy babies/healthy children, and prenatal/postnatal health
Develop and implement the community health promotion and prevention program and events
Provide induvial health monitoring and advocating for clients as required
Coordinate non-insured health benefit services for clients as required
Order, stock, dispense and distribute supplies as required, following Health Canada’s policies and procedures
Work with the Health Information system data EMR to ensure accurate and up to date immunization, chronic disease, communicable disease and health education records are kept on all community members
Address client safety on a regular basis in community newsletters and client safety committee meetings, and attend annual training concerning client safety issues and concerns
Ensure a work life and physical environment that supports the safe delivery of care and service to clients
Successful completion of the RN prescribing course and provide clinics to Biigtigong Community members or willing to obtain
