This is a permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per week) position.  The starting range for this position is $26.26 to $28.70 per hour.


You will frequently deal with clients in crisis situations, brought about by diverse problems.  There will be other staff nearby to assist as required. 


Main Duties & Responsibilities



  • Model Christ in word and deed.

  • Counsel up to the level of personal expertise and refer as necessary.

  • Refer and assist guests/clients in finding suitable, safe accommodation.

  • Provide support on behalf of guests/clients, to external services.

  • Stock and restock, order materials, clean and maintain vehicle for each evening’s readiness and duties.

  • Drive into allies, parks, back-roads and homeless camps with the purpose of intentional contact with those in need.

  • Minister in the aforementioned areas during all weather conditions.

  • Provide feedback information to maintain the heartbeat of community and an up to date understanding of the needs of the areas being served.

  • Train and oversee second staff, intern and volunteers going out on the Mobile Mission.

  • Maintain specific logs relating to the Mobile Mission, including ETO.

  • Ensure the smooth functioning of the Mobile Mission Vehicle, including coordinating office services (e.g., cleaning), report any need for maintenance to the Maintenance Dept.

  • Complete administrative responsibilities (i.e. time log, reports, stats and stories).

  • Provide support as well as referral services to clients from the Capital Regional District.



  • Working alongside churches, pastors, groups, Christian leaders, Christian organizations, and Community Stakeholders to better support Mobile Mission clients.

  • Assist in developing strong interagency connections for referrals.

  • In coordination with Volunteer Resources and UGM Victoria, coordinate with local churches to plan regular volunteer opportunities (i.e. pop up meals and services in conjunction with the Mobile Mission).

  • Work alongside churches and pastors with a ministry approach that is consistent with Union Gospel Mission’s Vision and Core values.



  • Participate in staff meetings, training and development opportunities.



  • Adhere to all UGM published policies, practices and procedures, including Occupational Health and Safety.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Agreement with UGM’s Mission Statement (see www.ugm.ca) and Statement of Faith.

  • Personal knowledge and experience of the saving work of Jesus Christ.



  • Understanding of the importance of a high level of confidentiality within the organization and its clientele.

  • Ability to bring assistance to individuals living on the streets where there is the possibility of facing difficult and dangerous situations.

  • Experience working in a community organization, foundation or ministry.

  • Experience dealing with complex matters.

  • 2-3 years of related work experience is required.

  • Related post-secondary education preferred.

  • Other combinations of lived experience and education may be considered.

  • Valid Class 5 drivers’ license required.

  • Good English skills (verbal, reading and writing).



  • Basic computer skills (Excel, Word and Outlook).

  • Ability to work independently under the direction of a Supervisor.

  • Identify and solve problems and follow through on initiatives.

  • Complete UGM Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Course.


 


Working Conditions



  • Work Location


This position requires extensive driving throughout the Capital Regional District in all weather conditions. The position works in the office 10% of the time, church liaising 15% and out in the vehicle 75% of the time. While operating the vehicle, employee may be outside up to 75% of the time.



  • Physical Requirements


This position may require standing, walking or reaching for up to 75% of the time. Employee is required to look at a computer screen and use a keyboard for up to 10% of the time. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs occasionally.



  • Work Conditions


Frequent environmental exposures to cold, heat, and water. This position is required to work in an environment often dealing with clients in crisis situations brought about by diverse problems. The ability to function independently and frequently under pressure, while managing multiple concurrent tasks including emergency situations is an ongoing expectation of this position.



  • Hours of Work


Some work on scheduled days off may be required; moderate overtime may be required.  Working on statutory holidays may be required.



  • Hazards


Job requires frequent interaction with the public, some of whom may be upset, abusive, and/or violent. Employee is required to hear information about clients’ lives which may be troubling or upsetting, and may cause emotional issues including vicarious trauma. Job requires working frequently with people in unhealthy conditions and may include exposure to bodily fluids, lice and bedbugs.
