Job Description - CONCRETE OPERATIONS MANAGER Butler Concrete and Aggregate

Who We Are


Butler Concrete & Aggregate is a third generation-run operation that has served southern Vancouver Island for more than 80 years. Today, we are an industry leader adopting new technologies to pursue product quality and reduce our environmental impact. With a full suite of EPDs we have the lowest published embodied carbon values in North America. With many long-serving staff members, we take pride in our positive work environment and strong relations throughout the community.

We have a long-standing relationship with Lafarge Holcim being one of the first customers to the Richmond BC cement plant. Our current operations consist of 4 concrete depots and 3 sand and gravel pits. Our growing fleet of over 40 10-metre concrete delivery trucks gives us the largest capacity in our service area. With almost 100 staff involved in the operations today, we anticipate continued growth in the years ahead.


The Opportunity


The Concrete Operations Manager oversees our equipment, production and concrete sales with direct accountability for the topline performance of the concrete division. The role provides leadership, development and direction to the teams. The Concrete Operations Manager also plays a key role in maximizing profitability by developing strategies to optimize sales and cultivating customer relationships. This role also monitors the market and tracks market share to maintain stability, as well as the plan for equipment maintenance, major repairs and acquisition.

You will also oversee the Concrete Production Manager who leads the office staff on the order desk, dispatch, batch, QC/QA teams, and the unionized driving staff and plant operators at each depot.

This role also works closely with Aggregate, Credit & Finance, and other divisions as necessary to maintain goal alignment.


The Details


Operations



  • Manage and lead all employees within the concrete division

  • Provide career development for the teams

  • Own Labour Relation improvements, both financially and in terms of employee engagement with participation in labour negotiations, proactive or corrective actions

  • Identify opportunities for operational improvements, cost savings and productivity enhancements.

  • Lead and mentor a team of managers, operations, delivery personnel and support staff

  • Foster a positive and safe work environment, promote teamwork and provide training and development opportunities

  • Set and monitor Operations KPIs

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement best practices, streamline process and drive operational excellence

  • Create, manage and ensure solid process and performance metrics for the team

  • Participate in the building of career- and succession-planning for key positions

  • Travel as needed to various depots


Customer Service



  • Continuously develop offerings to showcase Butler as the market’s supplier of choice

  • Build solid relationships with existing and potential customers

  • Manage customer profiles and targeted action plans

  • Handle any and all customer issues professionally and in a timely manner


Sales & Marketing



  • Complete annual commercial strategies and determine annual and project pricing based on market trends

  • Create and implement sustainability strategy to promote initiatives

  • Manage commercial systems and tools, including development, execution and tracking of sales team commercial strategies and action plans

  • Coordinate a strategic framework and related action plans


Budgeting & Forecasting



  • Prepare and deliver annual sales budget with sound strategy

  • Build out accurate monthly sales forecasts for the management team

  • Manage monthly sales production balance forecasts with the logistics and operations teams to maximize profitability

  • Calculate backlog and compare to prior periods to assess the risk of not meeting targets

  • Assign accountability and develop actions for uncommitted volumes

  • Track and interpret market indicators (e.g. construction starts, building permits, housing sales, etc.) to understand key drivers of concrete demands


Health & Safety



  • Demonstrate commitment to leadership and mentorship in Health & Safety

  • Promote adherence to Butler’s safety guidelines and standards for both employees and customers

  • Ensure strict compliance with all health & safety rules and regulations


What You Bring



  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Business or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience

  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience in management or supervisory experience

  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience in construction or construction materials industries is required

  • Prior experience working with unionized workforces is required

  • Strong background in establishing safe working environments and understanding of the importance of adhering to safety guidelines

  • Outstanding leadership skills and proven ability to promote cohesive, happy teams

  • Keen ability to drive results

  • Proven ability to work with shifting priorities, manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, and manage time effectively

  • Ability to skillfully manoeuvre tough situations without damaging relationships

  • Professional demeanour and comportment

  • Outstanding skills with Microsoft Office, Google Suites, and other office software

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Inherent ability for accuracy and attention to detail

  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills
