Job Description - Controls Engineer Technician 6004235 Welland, Ontario L3B 5N4, Canada, Canada

The Controls Engineer technician is a member of the Welland Maintenance team working closely to support our Maintenance Operating System and digital manufacturing initiatives of high-quality reciprocating gas engines.


Essential Responsibilities



  • Assists and supports Plant Electricians

  • Perform work of a specialized nature covering electronic/electrical disciplines and mechanical work

  • Specify, design, interface, assemble, wire, test & commission new and existing electrical controls, machinery & devices associated with a production manufacturing facility.

  • Maintain plant machinery & equipment from routine electrical maintenance to complex electronic repairs.

  • Troubleshoot industrial electrical and electronic systems, using electronic test equipment (oscilloscopes, megohmmeters, multimeters, signal generators etc.)

  • Participate in Planned and Unplanned Plant and equipment power outages

  • Experience with calibrating instrumentation (i.e., ultrasonic, thermocouples, flow meters, analyzers, etc.) and tuning of control systems

  • Perform preventative maintenance as assigned

  • Back-up and Image Machinery and Equipment.

  • Battery replacement of PLC, CNC, and other sensitive equipment.

  • Perform IR imaging on Plant-wide equipment. Prepare IR reports and save them to the server.

  • Assist with machine connectivity plant-wide.

  • Accurately document repairs from service requests & PMs in the computerized maintenance management system.

  • Familiar with MES (asset) and convert service requests to work orders when required.

  • Liaison with external service providers or OEMs for machinery & equipment repair and overhauls as needed.

  • Specify material, equipment, and tasks

  • Will be required to attend specialized training for PLC ladder diagrams/logic, robot, machine controllers, OEM maintenance training etc.

  • Perform diverse and complex assignments in support of GE Welland Gas Engines

  • Reports any abnormal conditions of materials, products, or equipment to supervision.

  • Comply with all applicable health, safety and environmental legislation and policies.

  • Performs 5s related tasks


Qualifications/Requirements



  • Minimum 3-year Diploma of Engineering Technology in Electronics or Automation

  • Red Seal 309A Electrician Construction/Maintenance or 442A Industrial Electrician certificate of qualification.

  • Red Seal 447 Instrumentation and Control Certificate of Qualification an asset

  • 10 Years’ experience in a manufacturing environment concerning Mechanical Assembly, Automation and Robotics, Machine Repair, Hydraulic Systems, Pneumatic systems, PLC andCNC-based control and logic systems, SCADA, HMI and Servo, AC and DC Drives.


Desired Characteristics:



  • CNC Manufacturing experience or industrial atmosphere

  • Experience with programming and troubleshooting PLC’s

  • Experience with Rockwell, Siemens, Fanuc & Okuma controllers

  • Experience with Multi-axes robots

  • Familiarity with various CNC machines, including but not limited to Okuma, Makino, Nile Simmons, Mori Seiki, and WFL.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional team members

  • Proven ability to adapt to changing priorities and working conditions

  • Ability to work shutdowns or overtime when required


Work Environment



  • Heavy industrial, requiring 100% of the time per week in the plant. Required to wear personal protective equipment.

  • Exposure to noise; heights, lighting conditions, materials, products, and by-products associated with the manufacture of engine components.

  • Required to climb stairs, and ladders to access elevations, able to crouch for periods, push, pull, lift and turn while carrying tools, material and equipment in various parts of the facilities.


Reports to:


·The respective Facilities & Maintenance Support Leader, and takes leadership and direction on specific controls, electrical and instrumentation tasks and duties, company-wide. The successful candidate will assist and take direction from the Controls and Automation Manufacturing Engineering Specialist.
