Job Description - Controls Technician

SaskEnergy is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to join our team. The Controls Technician performs a variety of duties related to design recommendations, material procurement, project leadership, installation, project safety, commissioning, maintenance and repair/construction oversight, of Corporate facilities in accordance with applicable regulations, standards, specifications and accepted industry practices.

Note: This role is focused on the Operations/Maintenance or Construction area. Some duties listed may only apply to the area in which it is applicable.

Position Details

  • Union – This position is permanent full time.

Core Responsibilities

Installation Services and Maintenance/Construction and Commissioning Services

  • Lead and coordinate on-site construction contractors and perform electrical and instrumentation dual trade duties for the installation/construction, calibration, inspection, testing, commissioning, maintenance, trouble-shooting, alteration, and repair of electrical, electronic and pneumatic facilities to meet corporate, safety and environmental standards, specifications, rules and regulations. The facilities include but are not limited to:

    • Electric power and distribution facilities.

    • Pneumatic instrument and control facilities.

    • Process control systems.

    • Data acquisition and communications equipment.

    • Measurement, gas quality and pressure regulation equipment.

  • Perform and oversee the maintenance and inspection/construction and commissioning of electrical equipment and controls during major plant shutdowns or other electrical maintenance activities/capital projects, adhering to specific safety guidelines and precautions.

  • Provide advice and recommendations to co-workers and others on electrical safety.

  • Provide on-site quality assurance of tendered electrical and instrumentation installation contracts to ensure adherence to specifications and to verify any extra construction claims.

  • Make changes to control programs in conjunction with the automation group.

  • Procure materials and maintain tools for use on site with respect to the installation, maintenance/construction, alteration and repair of related equipment.

  • Provide technical support and mentorship in relation to instrumentation and electrical equipment to other staff and provide input to optimize system operations or designs.

  • Provide input to design, installation and layout specifications with consideration for future operation and maintenance activities.

  • Participate in the assessment of new technology and resources.

Administration, Scheduling and Training

  • Coordinate work activities with co-workers and contractors to ensure minimum interference to plant and system operation.

  • Coordinate with key stake holders (e.g. supervisors, customers and utilities) to ensure the safe and timely scheduling of maintenance and installation/construction activities as required by operations or facilities.

  • Maintain operating/construction records in accordance with procedures for:

    • Administration of time allocations to projects and work orders.

    • Field changes/red-lines to drawings, manuals and software.

    • Apparatus and equipment records.

    • Unit Calibration records.

    • Quality Control records.

    • Reporting on work activities.

  • Design, assess, implement, and adhere to preventative and predictive maintenance programs.

  • Ensure that red-line drawings are completed, correct, and communicated to stakeholders in a timely fashion.

  • Identify material and parts required for work assignments and acquire as needed in accordance with purchasing procedures.

  • As the qualified incumbent, oversee the work of other employees and contractors as assigned to ensure work is performed in accordance with instructions, standards and specifications. This includes training and mentoring apprentice personnel.

  • Stay current with new technology as it is introduced for use in new designs and stay current with revisions to the Canadian Electric Code.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.

  • Provincial or Interprovincial Journeyperson Electrician Certificate.

  • Provincial or Interprovincial Industrial Instrument Mechanic Certificate or Industrial Instrument Technician Certificate.

  • Physically Fit (documented by a doctor’s certificate recognizing job requirements).

  • Valid class 5 driver’s license.

Alternative Education/Experience

  • If there are no qualified applicants with the above qualifications, an applicant may be selected and appointed based on the following qualifications:

    • Grade 12 or equivalent.

    • Entrance requirements in accordance with the Provincial Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Standards for the journeyperson certificate to be apprenticed in.

    • Provincial or Interprovincial Journeyperson Electrician Certificate.

    • Physically Fit (documented by a doctor’s certificate recognizing job requirements).

    • Valid class 5 driver's license.

Additional Information

  • In the selection for an Apprentice, the Company will determine the trade certification required for the applicant to have and which will be available as the apprenticeship program based on operational and apprentice board requirements.

  • Depending on location, standby may be routinely scheduled or occasional.

  • This job is subject to call-out situations.

  • Travel, including overnight stays away from bid headquarters is required.

  • This job requires significant travel time.

  • This job requires extended work hours.

  • This job is safety sensitive, and as such, is subject to the provisions of the Drug and Alcohol Policy (Pre-Employment or Pre-Placement for Safety Sensitive Positions).

Prior to Dual Journeyperson Certificates: $51.65 ($8,378.66)
