This position involves food preparation, operational support, merchandising, and retail food service work within a cost recovery market environment that supports NAIT’s culinary and hospitality programs. The Artisanal Student Food Market operates as a learning-focused environment where many products are developed and produced through culinary curriculum, student learning activities, and applied educational experiences.

The Cook supports the daily operations of the market by supplementing student-produced products, assisting with food preparation as needed, maintaining food safety and quality standards, and supporting the organization and flow of products through the market. This role works collaboratively with leadership, coworkers, instructors, and students to help support curriculum-based production, retail merchandising, and the overall customer experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support daily market operations through food preparation, merchandising, packaging, and retail support activities.

  • Supplement student-produced products as operationally required.

  • Support the receiving, stocking, rotation, and presentation of products developed through culinary and hospitality programming.

  • Assist with packaging, labeling, pricing, and merchandising retail products.

  • Maintain product quality, consistency, freshness, and presentation standards.

  • Monitor inventory levels and communicate shortages, waste concerns, or quality issues to leadership.

  • Receive, organize, and store products and supplies following food safety procedures.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen, storage, prep, and retail service areas.

  • Operate kitchen and food service equipment safely and efficiently.

  • Follow food safety, sanitation, allergen, and workplace safety procedures at all times.

  • Provide professional and courteous service when interacting with students, staff, visitors, and coworkers.

  • Support and contribute to a collaborative student learning environment.

  • Assist with onboarding and supporting new staff and student workers as required.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of food preparation methods, food safety practices, and kitchen equipment.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Ability to work efficiently and maintain quality in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize competing responsibilities.

  • Strong attention to detail, cleanliness, organization, and product presentation.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

  • Professional communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions in English.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs unassisted.

  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and split shifts.

Qualifications

  • Valid Journeyperson Certificate – Cook required.

  • Food Safety and Sanitation Certification required.

  • Several years of experience in food service, food production, retail food environments, or hospitality operations required.

  • Experience working within educational, institutional, catering, or retail food environments is an asset.

  • First Aid certification may be required depending on operational assignment.

  • Equivalencies may be considered.

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES).

Classification – Cook

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.

Remuneration

Refer to salary range noted on this posting, plus 12% in lieu of statutory holidays and vacation pay.

Note: Remuneration for part-time positions will be pro-rated based on FTE (full-time equivalent).

The compensation range for this job posting is : $21.68 - $27.61
