About the Program

The 1.1.2. is a transitional housing initiative for young adults ages 18–24 in Surrey, operating a 30‑bed residence with 24‑hour staffing and support. Residents live in a substance‑free environment and receive individualized, one‑to‑one support focused on building life skills, setting goals, and participating in structured group activities that promote stability and independence.
As youth prepare to transition, The 1.1.2. provides housing search and transition planning, moving assistance, landlord advocacy and mediation, and coordination with social workers and other systems partners to support successful moves into safe, stable, and affordable independent housing.

Position Summary

The Cook will work alongside and under the direction of the lead Cook to assist with the planning, preparing and delivery of nutritional meals seven days a week. The position could also be responsible for purchasing groceries, maintaining inventory, and ensuring the kitchen and workspace meets health authority cleanliness and safety standards. Recognition that the youth are diverse, incorporating diverse cultural foods while maintaining nutritional standards is essential.

Responsibilities

• Provides healthy, nutritious meals for residents


• Maintains kitchen documentation and records for reporting, maintaining health authority safety standards including sanitation and food temperatures


• Facilitates food sustainability and knowledge within the program; actively participates and assists in coordinating food recovery activities with partners and community services


• Ensures good safety practices using a preventative approach; training includes kitchen health and safety skills, knife safety, kitchen communication, cleaning procedures, equipment safety, professional food safety and basic cooking methods


• Liaises with on-site partners to coordinate kitchen access to external and internal groups


• Orients volunteers, partners and staff to health and safety procedures in the kitchen


• Provides food support and consultation for special events


• Maintains responsibility for regular kitchen and equipment cleaning


• Handles emergency situations safely and in accordance with agency policy and procedures


• Communicates effectively with coworkers and staff and participate in team efforts


• Participates in professional development and training


• Participates on committees, working groups, and associations as required


• Develops community networks relevant to managed services


• Provides strengths-based feedback to residents to encourage learning and growth while maintain kitchen safety


• Works closely with leadership and JOSH committee or representatives to ensure kitchen and food safety

Competencies & Knowledge

• Academic work in nutrition, health sciences and social services is considered.


• Menu planning, incorporating diverse and local cultural foods.


• Ability to respond to crisis scenarios using agency protocols and ethics.


• Effective team collaboration skills.


• Strong verbal, interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills.


• Excellent time management skills and the ability to handle multiple, often conflicting priorities.
