Job Description - Cook (PPT) (SEIU 5.26) (Up to 2)

As a Cook at Norview Lodge, you’ll prepare and serve nutritious, appealing meals tailored to residents’ dietary needs, ensuring a safe and enjoyable dining experience. Your work will directly support resident health, well‑being, and quality of life within a collaborative care environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direction to dietary staff in the absence of the Supervisor
  • In consultation with Nutritional Services Supervisor, reviews menus, cooking schedules, modified diet preparation, use of leftovers, etc.
  • Estimates food needs and requisitions supplies, suggests menu or recipe changes, check stock and be aware of any shortages that might result in a change of menu
  • Cook food according to the standard recipes and portion servings as per menu combinations as well as specific resident meal plans
  • Refer to menu and assist in preparing a list of products that need to be ordered
  • Inspect food including meats in storage, refrigerators, and freezers
  • Direct the sanitary maintenance of storage rooms, units, stoves, work tables and equipment
  • To participate as a team member in providing Resident centered care and service
  • Undertake all duties and responsibilities in compliance with Health and Safety standards, guidelines and legislation, including compliance with Public Health standards and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care regulations
  • Participate in in-service educational opportunities
  • Maintain an awareness (at all times) of emergency procedures; participate in drills and associated educational opportunities
  • To be aware of and comply with all Corporate and facility policies and procedures
  • Adhere to infection control policies, procedures, protocols, routine and additional practices as required
  • Orientate new staff and student placements as required
  • Confidentiality is of extreme importance and must always be maintained
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent.
  • Chef Training or Culinary Management Diploma or Certificate by a College established under the Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology Act
  • Must maintain current Food Handlers’ Certification (as per Public Health)
  • Previous relevant experience in a long term care setting preferred

Skills and Abilities:

  • Resident and customer service focus
  • Good communication skills (both oral and written)
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Familiarity with operation of telephone system and institutional kitchen equipment
  • Must be committed to a common purpose, performance goals and approach
  • Creativity in the plating and preparation/ presentation of attractive and appetizing meals
  • Commitment to quality food production and service and on-going quality monitoring and improvement
  • Computer expertise in corporate standard software (Microsoft Office) and department specific software to data search and entry and to create and modify word processed documents
  • Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act
