Position Summary


Reporting to the Associate Director, Student Services, Counsellors work collaboratively within Student Services and across campus departments with instructors, program chairs, and deans.



Counsellors on the mental health team are responsible for promoting student mental health and well-being, personal development, student success, and student retention by designing, and providing a comprehensive range of non-clinical psychological and educational services to assist enrolled students in achieving improved well-being in their personal, academic, and professional lives.



Position responsibilities and accountabilities include but are not limited to:



Learner Counselling Support




  • Works within a model of stepped care, implements short-term counselling (face-to-face, video and phone) to enrolled BVC students.

  • Identifies, assesses, develops, and implements effective counselling strategies utilizing existing theoretical models that work in a short-term model of care.

  • Develops counselling care plans that identify and addresses the impacts of colonization, racism, sexism, and poverty.

  • Provides psychological counselling services such as personal counselling, group counselling, and crisis counselling during office hours.


  • Coordinates and writes referrals to other health professionals including general practitioners, psychiatrists, and other specialists. Collaborate with community mental health professionals as part of stepped care model.

  • Supports students in identifying and solving emotional and interpersonal problems that may be impacting their academic success, well-being, and mental health.

  • Assesses risk when students present with indications of harm to self or others, or suicidality, and responds appropriately.

  • Works collaboratively with the sexual and gender-based violence response advisor to create a seamless offering of counselling supports to students impacted by sexual and gender-based violence.

  • Consults with College staff and faculty regarding how to manage difficult or disruptive behaviours.

  • Engages in problem solving to work through ethical dilemmas with members of the mental health team.


  • Provides debriefing to students after a trauma has occurred.

  • Nurtures and supports students and encourages them to develop self-care while finding a balance between multiple demands.

  • Develops and delivers presentations, information, and training sessions to others.

  • Develops and delivers group counselling.

  • Writes case notes including student’s history and treatment plans.

  • Collaborates, plans, and coordinates a variety of mental health events and activities with other members of the mental health team.

  • Maintains and safeguards the confidentiality of student records and information.

  • Participates in professional development activities and remain current with frequent developments in mental health and counselling theories and practices.



Required qualifications:



  • Master’s Degree - Social Work, Psychology, Educational Psychology.

  • 2 - 4 years of relevant experience.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • If your education was received internationally we will require you provide an international education assessment through IQAS, WES, or one of the other nationally designated organizations upon hire
