Course Number-Section and Title: EDEC 617 780  Special Topics in Educational Studies: Land Based Learning

Course Description

Curriculum and Instruction: This course investigates major contemporary issues in Educational Studies while grounding all learning in land‑based, culturally sustaining, and community‑rooted approaches. Students explore how education is shaped by social, political, ecological, and cultural forces, and how reconnecting learning to land, place, and identity can transform educational practice, especially within the context of Eeyou Istchee.

Schedule: First week in-class, second week on land. Hours will be determined by successful applicant

Location: Mistissini, QC

Travel, taxi/mileage, accommodation and per diems from Montreal are covered by the Office for instructors who require it.

Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQRs):

Education

• A Master’s degree (in exceptional circumstances, applicants without a Master’s degree but with significant research or professional experience related to the course content may be considered).

Experience

• Expert knowledge of course content as outlined in the course description.
• Knowledge of the Quebec Education program (QEP) and the curriculum of the partnering school board with whom this course is being giving in collaboration.
• Familiarity with the 13 professional competencies specified in the Ministère de l’Éducation
• Knowledge of the impact of colonialism on Indigenous communities and proven record integrating pedagogical approaches anchored to equity, diversity and inclusion.
• Experience as a teacher, administrator and/or consultant in the partnering school board for which this course is being delivered.
• Experience teaching in the Quebec elementary school system.
• Previous successful experience teaching similar course(s) to pre-service teachers.
• Previous successful experience teaching similar courses in Indigenous communities.
• Experience developing curriculum, policy and/or instructional approaches grounded in Indigenous knowledge and pedagogies.

Other

• Adherence to evolving program requirements concerning course content and program-developed competencies; course content and references must reflect the most current advances in the field.
•  The course instructor is expected to demonstrate capacity and willingness to modify the course to the educational, social, and cultural context of the community in which it is being delivered.
•  Availability to participate in course coordination and planning activities prior to the course start date (approximately two weeks in advance; online format).
• Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience with Indigenous issues in First Nations and Inuit contexts, for example through prior teaching, community engagement, or relevant academic or professional work.
