Job Description - Cultural Campus Manager

The Tla’amin Nation is a forward thinking, self-governing, modern treaty nation located on the beautiful upper Sunshine Coast (qathet Region).



Position Summary
Job Type:                  Full-time (3-years), with potential to become Permanent
Hours of Work:         8:30 – 4:30 Monday to Friday
Reporting to:             Director of Community Services
Department:             Community Services



The Tla’amin Cultural Campus Manager will oversee, organize, and supervise operations of ʔəms ʔayɛ (Our House) & the Traditional Food Processing (TFP) Facility, collectively referred to as the Cultural Campus. This work is related to Goals 9, 11, and 19 of our Comprehensive Nation Plan.



Key Responsibilities


Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin policies, standards, practices and procedures as directed by the Director of Community Services. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to citizens, clients, employees and general matters of the Nation.



Oversee operations of the entire Cultural Campus, including:



  • Building operations – in/out access, booking inspections, etc.

  • Building management, maintenance, and janitorial services

  • Bookings, scheduling, and prioritization

  • Safety, emergency plans & response, and security

  • Upholding Standard Operating Procedures, cultural protocols, and museum & cultural property best practices

  • Advocacy, negotiations, and funding proposals to seek and secure funding for ongoing operations and programming

  • Temporary and seasonal staff including, volunteers, workshop facilitators, and harvesters including after hours coverage

  • Training and skill building

  • Communication of rules, expectations, and responsibilities associated with using various and specific elements of the  Cultural Campus

  • Coordinate and initiate all communications to citizens and public as it relates to the Cultural Campus, grounded in ta’ow

  • Budget management for programs, services, infrastructure, maintenance, and operations


Oversee operations specific to ʔəms ʔayɛ, including:



  • Communication and upholding of cultural protocols for use, including but not limited to ceremonies, workshops, and funeral services

  • Coordination of programming in various spaces, including Language lab, offices, commercial kitchen, museum, and cultural space

  • Programming at all levels – including use of Language Lab, offices, commercial kitchen


Oversee operations specific to the TFP Facility, including:



  • Safe management and operation of equipment to process and store traditional foods, including related training

  • Coordination and inventory of incoming/outgoing movement of traditional foods, including food storage and food waste management

  • Forecasting and supervision of programming and seasonal processing to be operated out of the TFP Facility

  • Processing and distribution of traditional food


Strategically network and partner, as related to:



  • Interdepartmental collaboration with Lands & Resources, Tla’amin Health, Community Services, Education, Recreation, Public Works, and Culture & Language teams as required

  • The development of the Tla’amin Nation Food Plan

  • Development and implementation of programming that is part of the Tla’amin Nation’s overall efforts as related to food security, language, and culture

  • Development of strategic partnerships to benefit food supply and traditional knowledge and skills development among staff and citizens

  • Coordination of workshops and training sessions


Qualifications



At least three years of experience managing overall business operations, including staff and budgets.



Diploma or 1- year certificate level program in related areas, such as but not limited to certification in:



  • Indigenous Studies

  • Operations/Facilities Management

  • Community Planning

  • Public Health

  • Food & Nutrition

  • Leadership an asset


An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered



  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Proven ability to work well with others in complex, multi-purpose environments with other departments and all levels of people (citizens, elders, leadership, public)

  • Experience with a dynamic set of activities (examples include museum, feast hall, commercial kitchen, butcher, harvest speciality equipment)

  • Knowledge of Tla’amin Nation, culture, and teachings

  • Demonstrated interest and knowledge in food security an asset

  • Ability to manage budgets, record keep, deliver reports and other administrative tasks

  • Program development skills

  • Ability to effectively communicate in a professional manner in verbal, written, and visual forms

  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence & acceptable Driver’s Abstract

  • Criminal Record check acceptable to Tla’amin Nation


Working Conditions



  • Work is performed in a variety of environments – office setting, outdoors in all-weather types, classroom settings.

  • The majority of work will occur at the Traditional Foods Processing Facility.

  • Travel may be necessary at times

  • Frequently working and communicating with others

  • Regularly wearing all necessary PPE
