Job Description - Cultural Support Worker

Cultural Support Worker 


 


Reporting to the Residential Survivors Support Team Lead, the successful candidate will work as a supporting member of the Residential Survivors Support Team, providing Cultural Support and teachings to the communities of Unama’ki.


 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Available to work evenings and weekends when necessary

  • Ability to travel throughout Unama’ki, providing cultural support and cultural teachings

  • Ability to coordinate in community cultural support and cultural teaching sessions

  • Willing to learn and share cultural teachings throughout Unama’ki



  • Adhere to the policy and procedures of Eskasoni Mental Health Services / Eskasoni Health Centre and Eskasoni Band Administration

  • Comply with Eskasoni Mental Health Services / Eskasoni Health Centre privacy and confidentiality policies

  • Adhere to professional standards and demeanor and align work and behavior with Eskasoni Mental Health Services mission / Code of conduct

  • Attending regular staff meetings and training related to the smooth operation of the RRS team and Eskasoni Mental Health Services.


 


JOB QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Post-secondary education in a related field or equivalent education and experience

  • Be recognized within one, or all, of the Unama’ki communities as a spiritual, traditional, or cultural leader/teacher, or knowledge keeper

  • Be fluent in the Mi’kmaw language and possess strong communication skills in the English language

  • Knowledge and experience working with, and in Mi’kmaw communities and understand the political, governance, and community structures

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals in the organization, communities and federal and provincial representatives

  • Understand issues affecting Residential School Survivors i.e., physical/emotional abuse, sexual abuse, grief, addictions, anger, and relationship issues

  • Must be trust-worthy and credible in all Unama’ki communities

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Have proficient computer skills and an awareness of Microsoft Word / Google Sheets

  • Strong Organizational Skills

  • Always maintain, the highest standards of confidentiality

  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team

  • Valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License & reliable vehicle

  • Candidates must have a clear Police Vulnerable Sector and Sexual Abuse Registry record

  • Ability to function well under stressful conditions and multitask.
