Culture and Heritage Technician

Position Summary

Job Type:                     Casual / on-call

Hours of Work:            Generally between 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday to Friday; some hours outside this range may be required.

Reporting to:                Territorial Stewardship Manager

Department:                 Lands & Natural Resources

The Culture & Heritage Technician has the responsibility to monitor works to identify archaeological and cultural sites and materials such as shell deposits, undiscovered burial sites, artifacts, and cultural materials. The Culture & Heritage Technician uses GIS technology to record site locations and characteristics of any cultural materials discovered in order to protect these important sites and uphold Tla’amin’s Culture and Heritage Law (2016).

Key Responsibilities

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin laws, regulations, policies, practices, and procedures as directed by the Territorial Stewardship Manager or any other such person designated by the Employer. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to Citizens, clients, employees, and general matters of the Nation. 

• Monitor Contractors during ground disturbances – excavation, replacement of power poles, anchor holes, shovel screening/testing, hand digging, and raking of ground soil for archaeological assessments.


• Conduct Culture and Heritage Field Assessments - forestry cut blocks, road building projects, bridge construction, etc., which involve visiting the block or development area and determining whether a further field investigation is required to do an Archaeological Impact Assessment (AIA).


• Use iPad/Tablet and GIS forms to record site location, photographs, and data.


• Collaborate with Archaeological Contractors and Senior Fieldworker to identify commonly found artifacts (eg. fire cracked rock, faunal remains, shell midden, petrographs, CMTs, etc.)


• Provide written reports to Management.


• Additional duties as assigned; these may be supporting the Guardian Program, Parks, Forestry, or Marine operations as needed.

Qualifications

Training, Education, Experience

• Grade 12 (or equivalent).


• 1-2 years’ experience in a similar role involving fieldwork, data collection, and reporting.


• A combination of education and experience will be considered.


• First Aid certification required or willingness to obtain.


• Willingness to undergo ongoing training, as required.


• Acceptable Police Information Check prior to employment.


• Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s Licence and acceptable Driving Record.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Basic writing and computer skills to complete necessary reporting.


• Reliable and responsible.


• Physically fit, able to walk long distances and stand for prolonged periods of time.


• Ability to deal effectively with others and be able to temporarily have contractors cease work when necessary.


• Ability to take and follow directions and work as a team.


• Knowledge of Tla’amin lands and cultural sites is an asset.


• Knowledge of Tla’amin culture and taʔow (teachings).


• Some knowledge of Archaeology is an asset.


• Knowledge of Tla’amin Nation’s new and existing land laws and regulations related to environmental protection is an asset.

Working Conditions

Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions as field work makes up most of the job tasks. Field visits may involve travel via helicopter, driving to a site by road, and/or possible marine transportation to sites within Tla’amin Nation giǰɛ (lands/territory).

Adherence to all safe work practices and procedures is required.
