Mission is located on the unceded, ancestral, and shared territory of the Stó:lō Peoples, specifically on Leq’á:mel, Semá:th, Máthexwi, Kwantlen, Sq’éwlets, and Katzie traditional territories in the lower mainland of BC. Nestled on the southern coastal mountain slopes overlooking the lush Fraser River Valley, Mission is a rapidly growing and dynamic community of approximately 41,500 residents, 20 kilometers north of the US border and 70 kilometers east of Vancouver. Although Mission is part of a broader metropolitan area, it still maintains its distinct and welcoming small-town flavor.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK
Employees in this position are responsible for planning and delivering the community engagement, education, and communications strategy for the implementation of the environmental program of Mission’s transition to automated cart-based curbside waste collection. Employees in this position must demonstrate exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to remain composed in occasionally stressful situations.
While some independence of judgment is exercised in carrying out duties within the established guidelines, more complex or unusual situations are reviewed with the supervisor to determine the appropriate course of action.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge of relevant provincial legislation, municipal bylaws and policies relating to solid waste management initiatives.
Demonstrated abilities in the development and implementation of public outreach and engagement strategies.
Ability to be courteous and tactful in a variety of circumstances. Conflict resolution skills are preferred.
Excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to work independently, establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
Ability to prepare and deliver effective written and oral presentations to public groups in a manner that is tactful, clear and concise.
Ability to prepare and maintain records, reports, correspondence, and various other materials related to the work.
Ability to recognize politically sensitive matters and maintain a high level of diplomacy and confidentiality.
Ability to handle communication of solid waste principles, or related information.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & Outlook).
REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Post-secondary education (certificate or diploma) in communications, public relations, marketing, environmental studies or a related discipline.
Minimum of three (3) years of related experience, including public engagement initiatives and activities; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Local government experience is an asset.
REQUIRED LICENCES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATION
Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license.
Typical hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Some evening and weekend work will be required; in such cases, the typical work schedule will be adjusted accordingly. Total hours per week are 35 working up to 7 hours per day.
The current pay rate for this one-year temporary position is $36.19 per hour plus 4.4% in lieu of benefits increasing to 12.4% upon completion of the probationary period. As this is a newly created position, the job description, classification, and wage rate are under review with the union and may be subject to change.
