Job Description - Data Analyst

Rewarding careers are built here

The Safety Codes Council (the Council) is a leader in Alberta’s structural and technical safety system. What we do matters — our work helps make the province safer, supports healthy communities, and contributes to lasting economic growth and prosperity. As an independent regulatory agency, the Council is responsible for helping ensure that Alberta’s structures and equipment are safe, accessible, and resilient.

What sets us apart isn’t just the impact of our work — it’s how we do it. Our people are trusted professionals who value sound judgment, learning, and integrity. We’ve built a collaborative, service oriented culture where work is meaningful and where people are supported to grow, contribute, and do their best work.

Data plays an important role in how the Council fulfills its mandate. Teams across the organization rely on clear, reliable analytics to understand what’s happening, improve how work gets done, and make informed decisions in a public interest environment.

We’re looking for a Data Analyst who enjoys working as an internal advisor — someone who is comfortable engaging with teams, asking good questions, and translating data into insight people can trust and use.

About the role

The Data Analyst is part of the Data & Analytics Team and is accountable for the design, quality, and ongoing maintenance of analytics and reporting products used across the organization.

This is a professional level role that blends technical capability with judgment and collaboration. You’ll work directly with teams to interpret reporting needs, recommend appropriate analytical approaches, and communicate insights clearly.
You operate independently within your scope and work closely with the Senior Data Analyst, to navigate more complex technical, design, or systemic data issues as they arise.

This is not a behind the scenes reporting role. You’ll be visible, engaged, and relied on for your analytical perspective.

How this role supports the Council

Analytics at the Council help teams:

  • Improve operations and service delivery

  • Make informed decisions across programs and corporate services

  • Use data consistently and responsibly in a public interest environment

Your work supports shared understanding — ensuring data is not just available, but meaningful and appropriately used.

What you’ll do

Analytics and reporting

  • Partner with teams to interpret business questions, even when needs are evolving or loosely defined

  • Recommend metrics, KPIs, and analytical approaches based on context and data availability

  • Design, build, and maintain dashboards and reports using Power BI in a Microsoft Fabric / OneLake environment

  • Develop and maintain analytical and semantic data models that support consistent reporting

  • Use data storytelling to clearly communicate insights, assumptions, and limitations

Data quality and governance

  • Validate data and investigate anomalies or quality issues

  • Explain data quality impacts in clear, practical terms

  • Apply data governance standards, including Critical Data Elements (CDEs)

  • Work with data owners, system owners, and IT partners to address issues

  • Escalate complex or systemic concerns as appropriate

Advisory and collaboration

  • Act as a primary point of contact for analytics and reporting engagement

  • Lead reporting and analytics discussions with clarity and professionalism

  • Support teams in understanding and appropriately using analytics outputs

  • Contribute to shared documentation, ways of working, and continuous improvement

What you bring
Required:

  • Postsecondary education in data analytics, computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field

  • Professional experience delivering analytics and reporting solutions

  • Strong experience with Power BI and SQL

  • Experience translating business needs into analytical products

  • Comfort working in governed or controlled reporting environments

Assets: experience with data quality initiatives, semantic models, Microsoft Fabric / OneLake, report optimization, and exposure to Python and/or PySpark.

Attributes that matter here
We’re looking for someone who:

  • Exercises sound analytical judgment, especially when information is imperfect or evolving

  • Is comfortable working in an advisory role without owning business decisions

  • Can discuss uncertainty, assumptions, and limitations openly and constructively

  • Takes personal accountability for the clarity, quality, and credibility of analytics outputs

  • Enjoys collaborating with others and adapting their communication style to different audiences

  • Sees analytics as a service that enables others to succeed

Why Safety Codes Council?
You’ll find meaningful work in a collaborative, service-oriented environment that values curiosity, integrity, and learning, while contributing analytics used across the organization to support data informed decisions across Alberta’s safety codes system.

Along with purpose driven work, we offer a competitive total rewards package that supports well being, growth, and balance, including:

  • Competitive salary, commensurate with education and demonstrated proficiency

  • Starting three weeks of vacation, plus personal days

  • 100% employer paid health and dental premiums

  • A health and lifestyle spending account

  • Professional development support

  • A flexible, employer matched retirement savings plan

  • A full time work week of 36.25 hours (Monday–Friday)

You’ll also benefit from a hybrid work environment that supports focus, collaboration, and flexibility.

This opportunity will be posted until May 13, 2026 or until a suitable candidate is selected. We’ll be reviewing applications and conducting interviews on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.

We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
