An exceptional career opportunity exists for a senior policing leader to assume the role of Deputy Chief Constable with the Victoria Police Department (VicPD), one of Canada’s leading municipal police agencies serving a dynamic urban environment in a provincial capital city.

The Victoria Police Department proudly serves the communities of the City of Victoria and the Township of Esquimalt and is recognized for its commitment to professional policing, innovation, and advancing community safety and wellbeing.

Operating under civilian oversight of the Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board, the Department works collaboratively with government, community partners, Indigenous communities, and service providers to address complex public safety challenges.



The Role



Reporting to the Chief Constable, the Deputy Chief Constable provides executive leadership across operational and organizational portfolios and works closely with the Chief, Police Board, and senior leadership team to advance strategic priorities.

The Deputy Chief operates within a governance framework that includes civilian oversight and strong accountability to the Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board.  The role requires sound judgment in complex, high-risk environments with significant operational, legal, and public interest considerations.

Key Responsibilities




  • Provide executive oversight of major operational or administrative divisions

  • Support strategic planning and implementation of organizational priorities

  • Contribute to budget development and stewardship of public resources

  • Represent the Department with partners locally, provincially, and nationally

  • Lead initiatives that strengthen community safety and organizational performance

  • Promote innovation and continuous improvement

  • Participate in community and VicPD events, including evenings and weekends



Candidate Profile



The ideal candidate is a respected policing leader known for strong character, sound judgment, and exceptional communication skills.  They bring experience leading complex organizations and building collaborative relationships across diverse stakeholder groups.

Process and Appointment



This is an executive appointment subject to an employment agreement approved by the Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board.  This position is a five-day work week with expected availability during evenings and weekends and requires permanent residency on the South Island.

Enhanced security clearance, consisting of police information systems check, personal questionnaire, polygraph examination, and reference checks, are conditions of employment.

This competition is open for a period of 4 weeks from February 18th through March 18th/2026.  Applications will be reviewed by the Chief Constable and the Director of Human Resources.  Shortlisted candidates will participate in an assessment and interview process.
